As instructed by Lord Datta, Indra began to meditate upon his own Guru Brihaspati. As soon as Lord Datta thought of Brihaspati, the Supreme Guru appeared instantly. For along Indra was under the impression that Brihaspati had disappeared to some other plane. This however was far from true. Sadguru is omnipresent and omniscient! He is all-pervading! This is the secret in Guru-principle. As soon as Datta, who was well-versed in this principle, thought of Brihaspati, He appeared on the scene. Brihaspati is Datta. Datta is Brihaspati. Indra, who was unaware of this principle, believed that Brihaspati had vanished to another plane.
Due to repentence, exhaustion of all bad karma and due to the worship/ penance undertaken, Indra had attained the worthiness. As such, Guru Brihaspati washed away all his sins and restored him to his previous glory in heaven. Lord Datta thus helped Indra, who had realized his mistake and who was remorseful, get back his Sadguru. But for Datta’s help, Indra would not have secured the grace of his Sadguru so easily.
If this was the fate of the Lord of Heaven, then what about us, the ordinary mortals?
Even during the time of Swami Narasimha Saraswati, an incarnation of Lord Datta, a similar incident took place. A spiritual aspirant unable to withstand the anger of his Sadguru, deserted him and instead approached Narasimha Saraswati and begged to be included as a disciple. There are many who commit this mistake. Narasimha Saraswati swami pointed out to him the mistake he was about to commit, explained to him the theory about the kind of Guru a person gets based on his nature and sent him back. The story of Trishanku is yet another example of the net result that accrues when a person changes his Guru.
There is no question of following 2 or 3 Gurus. You cannot have a Guru for summer season and another for winter season. It is incorrect to have one Guru for holiday season and another for working season; it is also not acceptable to have one Guru for housewarming ceremony and another for other consultations. A person should have only one Spiritual Guru!
