Orangutans are the only species of great apes in Asia and can only be found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, Indonesia. Currently the population of orangutans in Indonesia is decreasing, there are many threats to orangutan survival in Indonesia. The main threat is the loss of rainforest habitat to 80% of the forest in Indonesia over the last 20 years.
Another threat is the illegal animal trade and the hunting of orangutans. It is estimated that the remaining population in the wild is 16,000 to 65,000 orangutans. It is estimated that more than 7,000 Sumatran orangutans and 50,000 Bornean orangutans currently survive in the wild. The rate of decline in population with estimates indicates a loss of between 3,000 and 5,000 orangutans per year.
While orangutans have relatively slow reproductive rates. A female orangutan will be ready to mate and give birth when she is about 14-16 years old and will only give birth once every 8-10 years. Orangutan reproduction is also affected by the availability of food. When the food supply is reduced the reproductive rate of orangutans will also decrease.
Orangutans' survival will become more difficult without effective protection from the Indonesian government. But we as citizens of Indonesia must also support the preservation of the survival of this native Indonesian epidemic animal.
