La designación de Kroos es producto de la encuesta que, entre periodistas del ámbito deportivo, fue organizada por el diario de deportes “Kicker”. El mediocampista del club merengue con 185 votos superó ampliamente en la votación al jugador del Freiburg Nils Petersen con 39 votos y los 38 que cosechó el brasileño, nacionalizado alemán, Naldo, del Schalke.
