Se dice que el origen de este refrán, está ligado al comportamiento de los bebes, debido a que estos reclaman la atención a través del llanto. Cuando el bebé tiene hambre, se encuentra enfermo, tiene dolor ó incluso fiebre, quiere jugar y/o tiene sueño, llora para que le hagamos caso. Y muchas veces, también, llora en exceso para ser el centro de atracción. Es su forma de expresarse hasta que aprenda a hablar.
Esta frase o refrán se usa para indicarle a una persona, que el que quiere algo tiene que pedirlo e insistir hasta conseguirlo.
