Este bello arte llegó a mi vida en el año 2014, a pesar que mi familia materna se ha dedicado a esta tradición desde el año 1905, casi 120 años fabricando instrumentos para músicos y aficionados de toda venezuela y paises cercanos.
Todo comienza cuando puse a la venta los Cuatros Venezolanos que fabricaba mi tio Asdrubal Figueroa, eran instrumentos artesanales y hechos para venderse en el mercado municipal de la ciudad de Cumaná. Me di a la tarea de seleccionar los instrumentos con mejores acabados y presencia para ofrecerlos a la venta con el deseo de resaltar la tradicion familiar y la gran trayectoria que ha tenido la familia Figueroa como constructores de Instrumentos de la ciudad.
This beautiful art came into my life in 2014, although my mother's family has been dedicated to this tradition since 1905, almost 120 years making instruments for musicians and amateurs from all over Venezuela and nearby countries.
It all began when I put on sale the Venezuelan Cuatros that my uncle Asdrubal Figueroa made, they were handmade instruments and made to be sold in the municipal market of the city of Cumaná. I took on the task of selecting the instruments with the best finishes and presence to offer them for sale with the desire to highlight the family tradition and the great trajectory that the Figueroa family has had as builders of instruments in the city.
Despues de varias ventas de los Cuatros de mi tio, un buen día me encargaron un Cuatro Venezolano de Concierto, algo más profesional, pero escapaba de las manos de mi tio por falta de algunas herramientas de precisión y plantillas, el cual me recomendo que fuera a casa del Luthier Rafael Arcia, (gran amigo que falleció este año en el mes de abril a los 83 años), sin dudar un instante fui a visitarlo cerca de mi casa, me atendio con mucho cariño y aprecio ya que me recordaba desde niño, le comente que un cliente necesitaba un instrumento de concierto y desde ese momento comenzo la gran aventura y la curiosidad de ver como se fabricaba desde el inicio un Cuatro Venezolano.
Es gran día comenzamos a seleccionar las maderas y los accesorios que ibamos a utilizar para ese Cuatro, recuerdo que utilizamos Caoba, cedro y pino, seria un instrumento fantástico elaborado por ese luthier con trayectoria nacional e internacional.
After several sales of my uncle's Cuatros, one fine day I was commissioned a Venezuelan Concert Cuatro, something more professional, but escaped from the hands of my uncle for lack of some precision tools and templates, which recommended me to go to the home of Luthier Rafael Arcia, (a great friend who died this year in April at age 83), Without hesitating a moment I went to visit him near my house, he attended me with great affection and appreciation since he remembered me as a child, I told him that a customer needed a concert instrument and from that moment began the great adventure and curiosity to see how a Venezuelan Cuatro was made from the beginning.
That great day we began to select the woods and accessories that we were going to use for that Cuatro, I remember that we used mahogany, cedar and pine, it would be a fantastic instrument made by that luthier with national and international trajectory.
Al final de la jornada y de tantas visitas de mucho provecho al taller, se logro terminar ese instrumento encargado por un señor de la ciudad de Caracas llamado Gustavo Cristancho y resulto estar súper feliz con el Cuatro que fue fabricado por el Luthier cumanés Rafael Arcia.
Entre las visitas diarias al taller fui sumergiendome en el arte que estaba en mis venas por mis antepasados por casi 120 años y el maestro al ver mi interés y amor a la fabricación me regala unas maderas para que iniciara en el mundo de la luthería, viendo en mí ese dote de fabricante y de ingenioso que tiene inmerso cada luthier y que mi familia ha tenido desde hace muchísimos años.
Sin dudar tome las maderas y dado a la confianza del maestro en creer que si podia hacerlo tome mis primeras clases en su taller y regrese a casa súper contento con este proyecto sin saber seria el inicio de mi trayectoria imparable que he tenido desde hace 8 años.
At the end of the day and after so many useful visits to the workshop, we were able to finish the instrument ordered by a gentleman from Caracas named Gustavo Cristancho, who turned out to be very happy with the Cuatro, which was made by the luthier Rafael Arcia from Cumana.
Between the daily visits to the workshop I was immersing myself in the art that was in my veins by my ancestors for almost 120 years and the master seeing my interest and love to the manufacture gave me some wood to start in the world of luthiery, seeing in me that dowry of manufacturer and ingenious that every luthier has immersed and that my family has had for many years.
Without hesitation I took the wood and given the confidence of the master in believing that I could do it, I took my first classes in his workshop and returned home super happy with this project without knowing it would be the beginning of my unstoppable trajectory that I have had for 8 years.
Entre algunas dudas sobre la fabricación y medidas del instrumento, mi tio Asdrubal me apoyo desde el comienzo y logramos terminarlo satisfactoriamente, fue un logro para los tres, el maestro Arcia, mi tio y yo, todos nos sentimos orgullosos de esa labor tan importante, sobretodo para mi tio por que sintio que la tradición familiar seguiria su curso en mis manos.
Pero el proyecto no terminaba, habia que darle el acabado de lustre final y conte con el apoyo del hijo del maestro Arcia, Wilmen Ramos, a quien todos conocemos como "Piñita" y es actualmente el sucesor de su papá en el taller, él se encargo de pintar y laquear aquella obra que por varias personas logramos hacer.
Among some doubts about the manufacture and measurements of the instrument, my uncle Asdrubal supported me from the beginning and we were able to finish it satisfactorily, it was an achievement for the three of us, the master Arcia, my uncle and I, we all feel proud of this important work, especially for my uncle because he felt that the family tradition would continue its course in my hands.
But the project did not end, we had to give the final polish finish and I had the support of the son of the master Arcia, Wilmen Ramos, who we all know as "Piñita" and is currently the successor of his father in the workshop, he was in charge of painting and lacquering that work that several people managed to do.
Desde entonces ese Cuatro Venezolano de 14 trastes lo tengo bien consevado en casa y es digno de admiración y orgullo por mi familia y amigos al saber que ese fue el inicio de la excelente labor que sigo haciendo con mucho cariño y dedicación, convirtiendome así en la 4ta. Generación de Luthieres de la Dinastía Figueroa.
En los próximos post les contare como ha sido la evolución familiar de las 4 generaciones de luthieres y de como hacer luthería en casa hasta llegar a mi actual taller.
