Removable Rewards - Seeking community support to remove rewards on duplicate comments

in #spam7 years ago

In my initial work I'm hearing a growing call to consider downvotes and while I'm not entirely opposed to the idea, I have basically no SP myself today and I do like the idea of staying somewhat neutral.

The bigger issue I constantly struggle with is bandwidth, so I have a new approach to test which is a great alternative to my own excessive comments.

Community Driven Rewards Removal

Instead of focusing on preventing the upvotes in the first place, I can shift my focus to removing any pending rewards from these comments.

While I can't do a lot myself to remove these rewards, many of you have plenty of available voting power to help chip away at these unreasonable rewards. My thought is to compile a simple list of these posts along with a little background on the account posting to give context and ask the community to help push these rewards to zero.

Many of these accounts are blatantly posting to capture upvotes so my hope is that if we literally erase those rewards these posts will stop. I honestly can't imagine why anyone would continue posting if we erase all rewards and downvote their accounts into greyed out oblivion.

A secondary consideration is the decentralization of power here. While I may present as judge, I am no jury or executioner (as long as I'm not downvoting) and if this rewards removal is driven by the entire community I can think of no better form of decentralization.

The underlying goal I am driving toward is to eliminate superfluous comments and I feel like this is on the right track. And if I can do this without adding to bandwidth problems myself I'll feel WAY better about my work.

Reporting Rewards

I've looked to some of the high volume accounts I've commented on to find their comments with the largest pending rewards. I want to detail this list of the highest pending payouts on duplicte comments so we can target the highest value areas first.

I'm using SBDS as my datasource, which does not include pending payouts, so it's a bit tricky for me to capture that today so I'm doing it manually. I'm looking to refine and automate this more, but for now I'll put in the work to get this out there.

Since this is manual I'll gather only those with larger rewards, however there are still countless posts at $0.01 or so that should also be handled. For this, I'll simply detail these accounts posting duplicates along with a link to all comments so you can do a quick scan for any with more than $0.00 showing and help with those as well.

I spoke of this account in my intro post and I thought I had reached it on some level as it stopped posting. That lasted about a day, but this was added to the cover.

Up soon? Why not stop posting until you have that in place? No matter, the community has already pushed this account into a negative reputation.

Even so, there's still a fair amount of rewards pending.

And don't forget to scroll through the comments to look for some of the smaller rewards.

Not Commenting for Rewards

Something else I've realized is that not all of these duplicate comments are intended to grab upvotes. Some are all about getting a message out far and wide, particularly to use a bid/resteem bot such as the @hdporn account.

For these comments, my reply is entirely pointless and while there are a negligible amount of rewards, that is not the driving force behind these duplicate comments. Accounts like this are billboarding a message anywhere and everywhere without regard to rewards. So, how can we stop this?

Reputation

Ah, yes, the often misunderstood reputation score! While I could wax poetic on the beauty of log10 I'll spare the technical details today and get straight to the point.

If we push an account to a reputation score of zero (or less) every comment it makes is automatically hidden.

Restating for emphasis.

If we push an account to a reputation score of zero (or less) every comment it makes is automatically hidden.

Once we hit zero, every comment by that account will be out of sight, behind a clickwall at the bottom of the page.

And even after you click through to reveal, it's still pretty obvious.

Reputation Downgrade

My thought is to identify these accounts eligible for a reputation downgrade and encourage everyone to simply go and start downvoting any and all posts to drive down the reputation score.

I'll definitely include any high value payout posts like above, but downvoting any comment even without any upvotes still helps to lower the reputation score of the account. I'm going to explore the math a bit more to understand the scope of what we're dealing with here, but without even running the numbers I'm seeing some clear evidence that the community can join together to reach tangible results. Again, I can't imagine why an account would continue posting at that point, since the message would not reach anyone.

Speaking of clear evidence, I'm pleased to see that @ipostbtcprice and @rotjaeley have both been pushed down to zero or less!

@ipostbtcprice is at -1 so just under zero.

ipostbtcprice_rep.png

And @rotjaeley shows at 0 but is actually just slightly above at 0.1

rotjaeley_rep2.png

Now, the @hdporn shows a rep of 2, but it's actually closer to 3, so maybe throw a few more downvotes that way.

This is just a sampling of these accounts, I need to explore this more and put together a more thorough report, which I'll post shortly.

What's Next?

Now, my primary focus is to identify these accounts making duplicate comments and then find the largest pending payouts to bring before the community for potential removal of those rewards. I do plan to comment some, but I'm shifting my intent from preventing upvotes to removing them, which fundamentally decreases the volume of my comments.

For all of the upvotes listed here, I made a comment like this.

remove_upvote.png

While I like this in theory, this again is manual today so I'll explore whether this will continue or not.

I may also extend an offer of compromise to the poster, basically asking them to stop or change the approach before I proceed with the public reporting of rewards.

And beyond rewards, I'm interested to see if we can move the needle with my Reputation Downgrade idea. To a certain degree, that same logic applies to all of these duplicate comments as this would completely filter those messages out, making upvotes and rewards moot.

I'll put together a Reputation Downgrade post soon with my intial findings.

I'm excited by these new ideas so I'm hoping for your support to remove these rewards and downgrade a few reputations!

As always, I value your feedback so please share your thoughts and ideas of how we can all work together to make it clear this spam is unwanted and uninvited.

Also, resteems are greatly appreciated to help get my message in front of more people!
