Family Volunteer Morning at St Martin's Village NPO - OPERATION FIX THE STORAGE SHED

in #southafrica2 years ago (edited)

You know your family's the best when they all agree to volunteer with you on a Saturday morning! Well, that's what my family got up to this morning. We sacrificed a long lie in and decided to give back to our community. We donned our work clothes, grabbed our brooms and dust cloths, and headed off to St Martin's Village, a home for abandoned and vulnerable children.

The task at hand: OPERATION FIX THE STORAGE SHED

The storage shed is currently in terrible disrepair. The task at hand was to clean it out, get rid of the vermin rats)that claimed squatting rights, and determine how much tender love and care the shed needs to be restored to a healthy working order.

The NPO reached out to community members to restore the shed so that they can use it to safely store precious donations that will later be used in outreach programs. The shed cannot be trusted in its current condition. The structure has shifted and if it's not repaired immediately, it could collapse altogether.

The clean-out took some time and, when we stumble on a hornets' nest, the project nearly went pear-shaped. But our group of volunteers persevered and it wasn't long before we had the interior cleaned out. The mean then put their heads together to create a "to do" list.

It was hard, dirty work, but well worth the effort. We got to spend some time with the kiddies from the baby home. These sweet souls deserve the very best.

At the end of the day, we reliased that the project is bigger than we expected and we will head back next weekend to:

  • Fix the roof and paint it.
  • Give the shed a fresh coat of varnish.
  • Patch holes.
  • Fix the latch.
  • Secure the structure.
  • Make a pathway.

All for these little ones:

Let's give this group one last "HURRAH!!!!"
