Singing sands are an unusual phenomenon for Russia. There are several such places on the territory of the country - on the Kola Peninsula, on the banks of the Lena and Vilyui rivers, Lake Baikal and here, on a spacious beach in the Kirov region. In a strong wind near the Atar River, you can hear a low whistle or a polyphonic whisper. Sounds are emitted by quartz grains of sand: they contract, expand and become electrified as they move. The frequency and loudness of the sound depends on the size of the grains of sand and on how strong it is. This effect appears only in dry hot weather.
