The first Brandenburg Gate was built in 1657 from wood. It was decided to strengthen them only after a hundred years. The Prussian king Frederick II issued a decree according to which the old wooden ones were to be replaced with new brick ones. The gates blocked the road to the south and served as a reliable defense of the city.

In 1843, restoration work took place in the city. The building was rebuilt and decorated: spiky decorative pediments, cruciform sandstone flowers, stylized leaves appeared. Two high reliefs were installed on the gate: Field Marshal Hermann von Boyen and Lieutenant General Ernst Ludwig von Astaire.

In 1860, the gate was reworked again. This time, the talented architect Friedrich August Stüller became the author of the facade project, as well as the Friedrichsburg Gate.

The Brandenburg Gate was hardly damaged during the Great Patriotic War. In the post-war period they were used as a warehouse. And in 1960, by the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR, they received the status of an object of cultural heritage of the Kaliningrad region.

Today it is the only one of the seven preserved historical gates that are used for their intended purpose. They have two passages, however, there is one difficulty - only one car can pass through them at a time. That is why congestion is not uncommon in this part of the city. The Brandenburg Palace itself has not survived, and the neo-Gothic gate survived it and became one of the main attractions of the city.
