What's the competition for Steemit?

in #socialmedia8 years ago (edited)

I'm still not totally sure what the target market for Steemit is. Obviously it's flexible, but one of the common uses I'm seeing is to post articles on various topics. There are various other sites that aim to do that, so let's see how they compare.

3tags

3tags has been around for a while. I joined fairly early on whilst still playing with Tsu and seeing what else could earn me something. 3tags seems to have stopped paying authors since then. I only ever made a few cents anyway. As the name suggests you could put 3 tags on any post. I never got much response there, but there were similar articles to what I see here. Obviously some were re-hashing existing information. I've already discussed that.

3tags

The stats show it's getting nothing like the traffic of Steemit and is not currently growing.

Minds

Minds was similar to 3tags. I think you can monetise it, but only by selling 'points' that you get for views and can earn just by visiting. You can use points to 'boost' a post and get it seen by more people. I don't see a lot of great content there to be honest, but maybe there are some good people on it. Note that 3tags are re-posting content there. There's a lot of cross-posting between these various sites. I've had people saying Steemit is a scam when I link stuff there.

![Minds](Minds

The visitor numbers are of a similar order to Steemit, but each user visits a lot less pages. They do still seem to be growing, but have been around for a couple of years now. They have an app whose views will not be registered, so maybe it's even more popular than it looks.

Bitlanders

Bitlanders is an odd beast. It's very cartoony and you avatar has to be a cartoon character that you can customise. I do check in there now and again, but never made more than a few dollars. Originally they paid in Bitcoin, but now show their own currency that you can exchange for Paypal or Payza with a threshold of $10. I never got to that and decided to donate what I have to some of the charities on the site. They have a fair selection of those. It seems to be big in some Asian countries (top are Pakistan and India) and I find the content to be not very interesting. Lots of food pictures, ripped off videos and travel blogs. You can gain points by views and by being active. They have a chat where some bots with do 'surveys' for points, but it's the same ones over and over. I also see the same old content on the front page. Apparently some people make a fair bit, but it just wasn't fun for me.

Bitlanders

Their stats show a slump this year. Again, views per user are low. They also have an app and perhaps that is the main way people use it.

Medium

Medium is a big player in this sphere. I have to admit I only go there when someone links to it or it comes up in a search. I don't browse the site generally. Apparently they have a membership scheme that gives you access to certain content. I assume people get paid based on that, but I've not really looked into it. There's so much content accessible for free.

Medium

They get 40x the visitors or Steemit, but only 10x the views.

Conclusions

I'm probably missing some other options, but Steemit seems to rank pretty well for visitors and views compared to there. People seem to stick around to read more pages than they do on other sites. I think Steemit ranks well on Google, so it gets views from non-members. That's important for exposure, but we need to get more of those signed up so they can be voting. Steemit is also a lot newer than any of these, so it's doing well for its age. If it could reach the size of Medium it will be a serious force with a huge economy. Of course even Medium is a minnow compared to Facebook, so there's massive potential.

Personally I'm treating Steemit as a form of blog. I just don't have the time for heavy research at the moment, so I will write about what I know and publicise my music and anything else that I think people should see.

Have you used other sites that pay? What has been your experience? Should we even expect to get paid for blogging?

Sort:

Right now it shows Philippines as #5.

Most people need to post good blogs there before earning well. I do have a 10 steps to earn more than $100/month there if you want to read it.

I think I should check on Minds. Lol. There's even another one I saw posted by levelnaut but I forget which one it is...

I gave up on bitlanders. Maybe you can make money there, but I got no real interaction. I enjoy what I get here and I can make $100 a month here having fun.

Wow that's amazing. Haven't really checked how much I make here per month. 😂

I guess you invested in SP so you earn that big here too.

Steemit is a Blog which uses the BlockChain. Steem is a crypto currency. not the same thing.

I was on Tsu for a while. I never heard of any of the others.
I hear noises about AddBuzz. I went to the site and checked it out...I was underwhelmed. All hat and no cattle.

I guess when there's money to be made people will post clickbait. I think a site has to gain a reputation for quality information. Medium may have that and Wikipedia is generally good as it is heavily curated by volunteers. People will do this for nothing as a service to others and I think that's a different attitude. I still see potential for Steemit to be a good place for artists and writers.

Like you, I go to Medium from links, and I've read some well-written articles there. I don't know the other sites. I use Facebook mainly to stay in contact with family and friends. I don't expect blogs on Facebook except those linked from other places.

Yes, Facebook is a very different thing, but I'm finding Steemit does have a social aspect. I just wouldn't use it to post pics of what my kids have been up to. I find each site has a different feel that depends on the design and the mix of people who use it.

I just wouldn't use it to post pics of what my kids have been up to.

Exactly. Steemit is not the place for 30 photos of a child's birthday party, but I'm thrilled to see those photos on Facebook, because I can't be at the party. I also wouldn't necessarily want someone underage to be on Steemit.

There is a site .. M something. I can't remember the name. Its is Steemit's copy of sorts. I registered, published one article, never got any feedback and forgot about it until now :)

In previous years I was a member of Bubblews and Persona Paper. Both R.I.P. now for opposite reasons :)

There have been a load of similar sites. There are a few that concentrate on images and/or video. Steemit seems to favour posts with more writing, but there are some good posts that are mostly images. I think the presentation needs to improve, e.g full screen slide shows.

You can't save video or image very well on a blockchain :) You would need really distributed and decentralised network of nodes to store it efficiently.

That's actually on the roadmap https://steem.io/roadmap/ipfs/

Cool. It is essential, of course, for any type of social / authoring network.

Hey @steevc I am with you...customize to what you have time for. I enjoy popping in here now and again and reading.. :)

CORRECTIONS:
(1) bitLanders top is Philippines 😋 But there are more users from Pakistan.
(2) bitLanders does NOT pay for views. Our earning is based on QUALITY and QUANTITY of video, blog and gallery we "submit for review". 5/5 star rating earn more, 4/5 stars and below earn less. For me, bitLanders is the BEST paying site because we earn even if NO ONE buzz/like/vote nor view/comment on our posts as long as we submit contents for review at least ONCE A WEEK and receive 4 to 5 STAR we could cash out $10 weekly. 🤑

Aside from bitLanders, I use myLot for posting short discussions and interactions.

I couldn't submit anything for review as I never had enough 'gems'. Maybe it works for some, but just not enough good content to make me come back and actually like stuff. I just post links there now and then.

Philippines doesn't show in the top countries on Hypestat for Bitlanders. Do people mostly use the app? I really tried, but never made more than a few cents per week. That's not worth my time. I've made over $100 in two months on Bitlanders, but I'm not cashing out yet.

http://www.mylot.com/ is a new one for me. Appears to be big in France, but views are falling

I see Mylot pay out from $5 to Paypal. I just don't have time to do another site. Just did a post on Bitlanders about why I don't plan to use it. Thanks for all the comments there, but it's just not what I want to do.

Hypestat is not reliable then. There are so many Pakistani bitLanders members and a handful Indians but top earner on bitLanders is from Philippines. There are handful Indonesians too. You can see them on bitLanders leaderboard and on every members profile you can see which country they come from (some shows incorrect locations).

Well it has been fairly good at showing trends so far. As I've said several times, if it works for you then that's good. Just didn't for me. Not enough interesting content

You're there? What's your username?

Where? I'm steevc on most sites

Ok. But I guess you're not active in Bit anymore so it's cool.

I don't have time to be active on multiple sites. I go where I get the best responses. On bitlanders I just got cat pictures :(

Hehe, it's ok. We go where we can get more. I use both because I just "work" online these days.

Care to share your success story here?

So I just learnt that Bitlanders evolved from Film Annex that started 10 years ago! No idea if they were paying back then, but they did give up on Bitcoin.

If you are happy there then enjoy, but I just report it as I see it. I gave it a fair chance and it didn't work for me. Could be a cultural thing.

I'm not sure if they gave up Bitcoin but I know they are only experimenting. They switch to different payment methods from time to time.

Oh hey there... what's your Bitlanders username? Am also there.
