Helping Social Media Refugees Settle Into Steemit

in #social-media8 years ago (edited)

Now that YouTube is stripping many of its creators of their monetization abilities, it's time for us to really roll out the welcome mat and get ready for the next wave of content creators to come calling. What can we do to make the migration easier for people so that they actually stay? What should we really be communicating to people about this new online ecosystem? Join us as we dive in and explore these questions over the next thirty minutes.

Thank you for having me! Great first talk, looking forward to many more :)
edit please excuse my "uhhhm's" and looking away from the camera, I'm working on it!

I found the conversion to be of much greater quality than I expected. That and the image/audio quality were on point.

For more discussions like this, be sure to check out the @SteemSmart podcast :)

Great thing you are doing! I am in the same boat and dont even get me started on youtube... its ridiculous how much money they have and don't share anything with us creators!

Yeah, and now their criteria for being "advertiser friendly" has gotten way out of control... fortunately the content creators have an alternative now ;)

yes I know, i thin it will be a game changer! As long as Steemit doesnt change too much!

So far, I've been appreciating the changes. I definitely think they're on the right track. Just gotta keep making it more familiar and user-friendly for newcomers.

A second thought on the peer-brother (as apposed to big-brother) is that anonymity was from a time where judgement from others was a much real issue. Perhaps this is still the case, but in our society it seems to be less of a problem as people are much more accepting of people with different ideas and lifestyles from their own.

There are still people that think we should be killed for our beliefs and way of life but it's much easier for us all to travel and find our tribes. In this day and age, if we're born into a community that hates us, it's easy to move and find people that accept us.

Great content. You guys are definitely touching on some really important issues that need to be addressed.

Another side of promoting the financial side causes some very funny reactions in people (and monkeys), see 'Freakanomics', 'Predictably Irrational', 'Drive the surprising truth about what motivates us'. Financial incentives that are either expected or only occur once will reduce quality and output. We have to sell the fun side and simplify it, as you say.

Thought based on this! Remove the USD value! Put it in funny money, this will resolve much of the psychological issues. @dantheman, what do you think of this?

Hehe yeah, lots of fun little psychological case studies to be found on here... and yes, monkeys can illustrate many of them beautifully. ~Example~

Tough questions to answer... and so many different angles that could be taken, disproving other answers given...

The questions like, "what should we do to..." might be inherently flawed, in that "we" think we have some real control or say in the matter - when it might be that this is designed as a self-organizing system that is bigger than us and beyond our capacity to accurately assess and direct it...

This could also be a potential downside of the decentralized model: who calls the shots?

The concept of democratic guidance may be great in theory, but what's the practicality of any of us being SO deeply immersed in every aspect of the ecosystem to confidently state what is best - and who'd actually be in a position to make wise decisions for the whole...?

As referenced to in my last post - part of the conflict I faced here is the illusion of rising to some sort of position of authority based on the success I did have here - which followed with a sense of wanting to teach or guide others; which may have been valuable to some at a certain point... though as time went on, its sorta like reality checked in and knocked down my ego to realize I dont know shit about what it'll take for this experiment to succeed - as there's tens of thousands of different experiences being had, not all of which can ever conform to any single agreement of what this is or "should" become...

There are no clear answers to the questions posed. Rather, perhaps the open-source aspect of this is the creation of a space where anyone is free to declare their own fragmented-yet-integrated fork, building their own unique tribes, apps, offshoot sites, etc - free to experiment with testing the validity of different theories and answers...

'Tis all an exploration and experimentation...

Yeah, I think tribal fracturing and organization is inevitable here on Steemit just as it is out in the world :)

First we had the light-side @piedpiper, characterized by his head floating in a heavenly white background.

But now we see the dark-side @piedpiper. I wonder what we can expect from him.

But seriously, you need more light. Like your hair blends into the background, LOL.

lol I know. Still a few more things to pick up before the studio is complete. Also, I didn't want to put hours into color correcting my shots and her shots separately :P

It's a nice idea because youtube is really getting too cluttered and this steemit would really be a great option. Let's work on getting it to the top by sharing.

Steemit is without a doubt the way of the future!
Either Steemit will continue to get better and better becoming a world influence or it will be the inspiration for the platform that is created in its likeness that changes the world!
This is without a doubt the cutting edge and superior to FascistBook or YouBOOB!
Great to see you back again Brother, you are one of my favorite Steemit Characters!
Wish you the best and thanks for all you contribute to the community!

Haha thanks! Means a lot :)

Great because I took the time to write it and wanted you to know!

Good to see you again. I assume you shot this in your Valdivia studio?

Did indeed :) You'll have to come and try it out sometime!

Great convo I'll check out the podcasts

Good to see you back here !

Thanks! I've been super busy with other projects lately. A clone or two would be fantastic. :)

Do you want to help bring some of your favorite youtubers?
Play this version of the game. I think if we all put efforts into bringing some youtubers, we can really help steemit grow.

Huge favor you are doing for all of us on steem. Feel free to check my cosplay work 2. https://steemit.com/cn/@kyleb15/clannad-cosplay-photography-special-edition-clannad-cosplay

Captain Scheare, do you need a new ship?

Yeah but they don't come cheap. Gotta wait a year or two for steem to rise in value first;)

Practical action is important, isn't it?

What do you mean?

Steemit needs new terminology so non-technical people can understand. IE: Steem power - Savings account (earn 90% a year), Steem dollars = newly earned dollars, steem = Checking account.

I like the idea of keeping the language as simple as possible but not at the expense of the truth. Steem power is so much more than a savings account (it's more like preferred stock in a company because of the voting power that comes with it). Steem dollars are definitely not dollars and steem is definitely not a checking account.

People can click "more info" if they want to learn more details about it, but these terms will make them feel like they understand the system and they will feel comfortable using it. It's very important for people to feel like they have an understanding of something before they use it.

I can't really agree with that. Most people have no idea how cell phones and computers work but they use them anyway. The key is to make them usable without understanding. Gotta keep the geekery under the skin, out of sight.

I would agree if it was the same context. In this case, we are dealing with their money, so they will care to know where their money is tied up in.

@overlord - Most people don't know how banks or credit cards work but they still trust and use them anyway. How many people realize that only 97% of all US dollars exist in only digital form? How many people understand fractional reserve banking and its implications? Don't get me wrong, I wish people were as informed and sensible as you make them out to be but in my experience, the vast majority of them just aren't. Having faith is just so much easier than doing your homework.

Thank you, make a big different
