The club from the Welsh capital will be returning to the Premier League after a four-year absence from the top division, and looking back before the start of the season it's definitely a surprise, as their odds to just make the play-offs where at 33-1.
It's incredibly their manager's 8th promotion in his career, which is a new record, and Neil Warnock's 4th promotion to the top division after previous successes with Notts County, Sheffield United & QPR and he described it as โthe biggest achievement in my 38-year career by an absolute mileโ.
They secured their promotion after a goalless draw with Reading at the Cardiff City Stadium, which was enough for the day as Fulham lost 3-1 away to Birmingham City. A huge pitch invasion followed the final whistle, as the pitch was covered in blue shirts.
They finished the season on an impressive 90 points, 9 behind league winners Wolves, winning 27 games in the process, scoring 69 goals and conceding only 39, which is the lowest amount conceaded, as much as the Champions conceaded.
Their top scorer in the league was surprisingly their Scottish central midfielder Callum Paterson, who scored 10 goals, but their star player this term was their Canadian winger Junior Hoilett, who has 9 goals and 11 assists in The Championship.
They now will be awaiting for what will happen with their bitter rivals Swansea City, as both clubs could be together in England's top division for the 1st time ever if The Swans manage to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
Elsewhere the 4 teams battling to join Cardiff & Wolves in the Premier League next season are Fulham, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough & Derby County, who all booked their places in the play-offs. In the 1st leg Fulham will face Derby on the 11th of May , while Aston Villa will face Middlesbrough on the 12th.
Will Swansea stay up so there will an all Welsh derby next season?
Think I read a somewhat interesting tidbit (as a spurs fan) that Harry Kane has scored against every prem opponent he has ever faced aside from Cardiff. Now he can rectify that.
It's really difficult for that to happen now mate. I would have loved to see it happen, but Southampton's win over Swansea was really invalueable, and also Huddersfield's draw with Chelsea. As for Kane, yeah most probably he won't have a problem in finding the net against Cardiff as well to make sure he's scored against every PL team he's faced :)
