Girona knocked Athlético Madrid out of the Copa del Rey competition after they surprised Athlético with a 3-3 draw, in what was an extremely entertaining matchup.
Nikola Kalinic had put Athlético in the lead with an early strike in the 12th minute, but that would just be the beginning of a frantic game.
Valery Fernandez put Girona back on leveled terms after firing a wonderful volley into the net by the 36th minute mark.
Athlético suffered some bad luck early in the second half, after losing Saul Niguez to a muscle problem.
Cristhian Stuani turned the game around in the 59th minute, after putting Girona in front with a fine header following a free kick. Athlético protested claiming a foul on their captain Diego Godin but the goal decision stood.
Antoine Griezmann came off the bench by the hour mark and helped set up a goal 6 minutes later. Sending a pass to Kalinic, who set up Angel Correa to put Athlético back on leveled terms.
Santiago Arias had a goal ruled out as offside later on. Diego Godin having his effort hit the crossbar previously.
Antoine Griezmann then put Athlético in front after smashing his effort into the roof of the net in the 84th minute.
Athlético soon had their celebrations cut as Girona didn't let them hold on to their lead. Borja Garcia putting Girona level again just 4 minutes later.
With just 2 minutes left, Girona ran down the clock to claim a victory on away goals.
Girona move through while Athlético Madrid are eliminated from the Copa del Rey.
