The traditions of a people are powerful tools of unification and more. The identity of the people lie in their traditions; once this is lost, their culture and history follows, then their language and then there's nothing left of them, no sign that they ever existed.
Some traditions can be negative but this does not mean that all traditions should be wiped off. For some people, it is their only link to their past.
Faith is a strong thing. The power of man's belief in the supernatural is immense and possibly one if the greatest grounds for division in the world.
Ironically, it is those who are poor who believe more than those who have been supposedly blessed by God. So I can understand their willingness to part with money that they don't have to buy candles. They believe that God is hearing them and is going to bless them and if he doesn't, he knows why.
This is quite interesting. It is really sad that you could not take more pictures. It would have been lovely to see.
