Well, we are blessed to live in the time where anyone who has a creative idea can accomplish it in the easiest way thanks to internet and crypto.
Now you've even paved that road.
All we need to do is ...stroll.
But, let's say we don't want own currency. We want a currency that will be useful for society. maybe we can make a tag in Steemit or similar and build a project together, where anyone intereted can participate.

Yeah, maybe like a "whiteboard" where anyone can attach their own idea, and anyone can build the concept of that idea and maybe multiple projects can be made out of it. Participants can get tokens of the future project if their idea or work was used in the project.

Utopian is a niche platform for the Steem blockchain rewarding open source contributions. SMTs are a new feature of the Steem blockchain allowing everyone to create new cryptos with Steem-features.
There is no SMT token... SMT allows you to create your own token.

You are absolutely right with all the costs. However, starting small and with a public strategy will bring you tons of support if you network and talk with people. It's much easier than going to find investors in suits. :)

What is the starting cost of a new website based on Steemit? I mean: is a shared hosting plan okay? Are do you need a dedicated server?

I'd like to learn more about utopian-io, but I didn't like that I had to give it a ton of control over my steem account, maybe once I've created a second account I'll give it a go...
Don't fear: They use the open source SteemConnect tool, developed from the Busy.org makers. It is endorsed by Steemit.com and handles all your keys without giving them actually to the third party applications like Utopian, Busy or DTube. And besides, Utopian has 4 Million STeem Power delegated to big chunks from Steemit as well. So it is a very trustworthy project handled by capable developers. :)

Helping is certainly easier. I started helping Utopian itself as a mod and then created my own idea.

Do it! It is a group effort the moment your project finds its first developer. You can push it and help to create funds while stuff happens in the background.
It's strange to me that crypto enthusiasts don't see the problem with ten thousand different blockchains in the market trying to pass off what is by-and-large the same technology in a different box. And because of speculation, branding plays a role in giving scams and shitcoins legitimacy. Unless you can improve upon the blockchain in a way that isn't a gimmick or redundant, but a legitimate improvement--then by all means, invent away. But there simply are not going to be 1000 coins on the market once blockchain technology has truly met it's mainstream adoption.

True. It is like free speech. You gotta take the bad with the good and hope that people will know the difference.
However, with many people learning how to start coins etc, the whole community raises its level of understanding and insight around blockchain
But does that change the fact of an alt being a shitcoin in terms of actual value? Feeling good may be valuable--but is it stable?
The main value most shitcoins has is in their low market caps, making them easy targets for pump and dumps. A tiny amount of money and effort going towards a social media campaign, slowly accumulate holdings, and then unleash the flood once you start pumping the price up and leave clueless people holding the bag. People are making digital billions at the expense of the less-connected, under-educated masses.
That is speculative value... But many altcoins have inherent value and will endure as mediums of exchange and stores of value.
I guess each coin has to show its own potential but I totally see thousands of niches with their own SMTs used in ten thousands of ways. When you trade between so many coins you will just automatically trade with current market values which will always be defined by the free market.
Don't underestimate what it's worth to people to trade in their own economy currency. It doesn't matter if much money goes into it because it can provide for a few on a smaller basis within its own community. I think that will be revolutionary.
The mainstream might adopt just one or three coins but we will see a totally tokenized world in my opinion with so many variations that nobody could ever keep track of anymore.
Here is what I think it is worth for people to trade in their own economy currency: nothing. In fact, it is actually costly because I have to exchange for another currency in each new market in which I want to transact. The tokenized world will be the mainstream coins, because there is not a need for so many choices of mediums to serve the same functions. That is why Chuck E. Cheese tokens can't buy me weed, no matter how persuasive I am with my dealer. But she accepts BTC...

I think Steem is a hivemind solution to basically everything.
For me being a complete tech idiot, this sounds amazing but also confusing. But wouldn't these projects just be little copies of Steemit? Maybe just limited down to certain topics or am I missing some point here?
Well, of course you want the full redesign and you need your niche and community. But they are already everywhere so all you need to do is find influencers with their communities discussing topics that will draw in all people interested in that niche. These things could become much bigger than Steemit itself. Look at DTube. They could rock with their own SMT and maybe even outgrow Steem itself. Video is popular content. And there could be very interesting other ideas in the making as well.

I am eagerly waiting for the SMTs to arrive - we will move it to the steam blockchain on day 1 they become available.We currently have around 3000 users - most of them are no steemit users so far. I think this will really boost the steam price once the become available. The question: how much longer do we have to wait?
