Lack of sleep not only makes us lie down on the desk in the afternoon and feel tired, but it also weakens a key communication between neurons in the brain, a new study found. The weakening in the signaling network of the brain can lead to holes in memory and concentration problems. And that somehow is comparable to the effects of hangover with alcohol.
Scientists have studied 12 patients who were attached electrodes which monitor brain activity. Particular attention has been setting aside of neurons in the temporal lobe of the brain responsible for visual memory and visual supplied information. The researchers found that when patients are becoming more tired, the activity of neurons has slowed and is a waste of power.
"Serious fatigue has a very similar effect on the brain as drinking too much alcohol," commented team. "Clearly we need medical standards to identify fatigue in certain relevant groups of people, such as weary drivers to avoid accidents."
