Exposed Chinese database shows depth of surveillance state
BEIJING (AP) — The Chinese database Victor Gevers found online was not just a collection of old personal details. It was a compilation of real-time data on more than 2.5 million people in western China, updated constantly with GPS coordinates of their precise whereabouts. Alongside their names, birthdates and places of employment, there were notes on the places that they had most recently visited — mosque, hotel, restaurant.

Talk about being watched, holy molly. But I think that our credit cards, phones and apps, etc. track us just the same. The only difference is that in Western countries, the spying is done mainly to collect data for AI software building or to resell to businesses and some government agencies, whereas in other parts of the world, it seems like the "monitoring" is actually done directly by the governments.
I think China is worried about the Islamic minorities in the west of the country having an uprising or something, hence this data collection on the citizens and particularly on the journalists.
The real-time monitoring is pretty disturbing, and quite scary to be perfectly honest. What other creepy surveillance program will the Chinese communists come up with next?
