I do think that comments contribute to your posts SEO because the create more content with hopefully even some of the keywords the post is optimized for. But mostly because they will add quite some length to your own material and that is often beneficial.

What is your opinion about editing your posts indefinetaly? That could be a great way to optimize older posts for some of your newer content and could also help in rewiring your SEO for some of those articles.
