Self-discipline is an interesting thing. On one hand, it seems like having to overcome the hardest obstacles to have self-discipline. On the other hand, there is no obstacle at all between yourself and your wanting to do something. So what is it that makes self-disciplined people so rare?
Dictionary.com defines self-discipline as “discipline and training of oneself, usually for improvement”. I would define self-discipline as the ability to want to do something and get yourself to do it even in times you don’t feel like it. The ability to follow up in action what you declare or desire to get done.
What is it exactly that makes self-discipline difficult? Why does it seem like the best thing for you is the hardest thing to do sometimes? Can you relate to being the most ambitious person on earth when you plan your next day and aim to wake up early, and then, in the morning, a voice talks you out of it. Not just any voice, but your own voice. The same voice that talks you out of going to the gym and talks you into procrastinating. It feels like a war inside our minds sometimes.
You don’t need self discipline if you are doing something you enjoy. Self-discipline is difficult because it often involves giving up short term pleasure, for long-term effort for a continuous amount of time to finally achieve success in the end.
People who have self discipline are more successful because they always set goals, and have something to progress and strive towards. To become successful one must learn to be self-disciplined.
Set goals that are fun and meaningful to you, and lack of self discipline will be a thing of the past.
