Whenever i read people losing their crypto's, it's usually on MyEtherwallet (or an exchange). I was very OCD on my own security and i found some very cool things that prevents you from accessing fake MEW (MyEtherWallet.com) websites!
If you do this, you are olmost garantueed safety :)
There are a few tips you probably know, but please read on, there are some things you probably dont know yet!
First of,
it's important you have a clean computer with a good anti-virus and malware program checken your pc daily! You just dont want anything on your pc! So get that done! A paid one is allways the best! Scan, rescan, use different malware scanners and make sure everything is in the clear! :)
2: Install HitmanPro.Alert as an chrome extension.
This encrypt EVERYTHING you type in chromebrowser. So if for somereason you Do get a keylogger on your PC, they still cant see what you type. Sweet ey?
3: Never go to MEW or any exchange clicking on a link!
Never enter your private keys, passwords, sensitive data on a website that you were sent via message. Chances are this is a phising link. Especially SLACK emails! Just never click links to log in. Period. Stop doing it. Now!
Not even from google!
Just stop google-ing your websites! dont EVER CLICK PAID ADVERTISEMENTS! Hackers just promote fake websites to get on top and steal your funds that way. this is No joke! I know people who this happend to and i hear it alot.
4: Only unlock your MEW if you want to send funds!
The only reason to unlock MEW is if you want to send funds. If you are like me and want to check what your wallet contains and if its still there ;) Use this!
Bookmark: https://ethplorer.io/ (paste your MEW adress after: .io/ )
So it should look something like this: (this is not my MEW but random characters;) )
https://ethplorer.io/0x5b532cfe5430fEd4302328a0345b9fii32f617Eaa
Just use this to check your MEW. If doesnt require a login, JSon file or anything. All ethereum wallets are online to check. But you can take funds, send or anything!
this alone makes it so much safer! Everytime you log in there is a chance someone is watching or trying to hack. So minimize the times you need to log in!
5: Always check that you are on the correct URL. (myetherwallet*.com*)
https://www.myetherwallet.com/ - this is the only correct adress!
not .io / .net / .org or whatever. its .com!
in front of that it says in green: MYETHERWALLET LLC (US)
this means it's SSL encrypted and verified. A hackers adress will never ever have this!
allways check this:
6: There is a Malicious MEW warning extension in chrome install it!
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/etheraddresslookup/pdknmigbbbhmllnmgdfalmedcmcefdfn
This is an offical chrome extension that blocks known malicous MEW websites. I have this extension and tried logging in to other MEW adresses and it just blocks it! :)
Websites have to be reported so if you are the unlucky one that is one of the first to visit, you still need to check and use all my other tips before you log in to MEW!
7: The is a MEW wallet extention!
you can just use MEW only from the extension! it's just like MEW but then in an extension. You never have to use link or type it in again! :)
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/myetherwallet-cx/nlbmnnijcnlegkjjpcfjclmcfggfefdm
8: You can run MEW locally and avoid the website URL situation entirely
you can avoid typing in MEW.com and just run it locally! check this link out!
I hope these tips will keep you safe and money in your pocket! If you feel this was helpfull please upvote, resteem and leave a message!
