The real problem is that it is hard to secure a device. A phone is powerful enough to give you some warranty but a sensor that too tiny. Of course the manufacturer want more functionality than security and as such don't provide an adequate minimum level of security.

Completely agree. On the upside, the normal rate of increase for technology is on our side. Soon these IoT devices will get much more capable and therefore support greater defenses.
