All Tied Up

in #sculpture7 years ago

This piece was made in November 2017...It is approximately 4ft long, with a cylindrical diameter of about 1ft.
Made of dumpster-dived ribbon and treated sisal baling twine.
I have thought about building or carving a wood sphere to put in the center, or even a large ball of twine.
Whatever I do, I would really like to enhance this piece, before I enter in into the pile for my graduation show.

Soooooo...

I guess what I am saying is "What do you guys think?" What should I do to make this piece better...or Is is just fine the way it is?

Help!

All the things!

Very neat piece of work!
I dont know what, if anything, could be done to make it better, but then again, Im not much of an artist. ;)

Thank you. I am half and half as to whether adding another element would make it look more or less like macrame...Which I really try hard to avoid with my work.

If you believe this piece is finished, then it is. In my opinion, it certainly looks complete on it's own in all it's detail. I don't believe you should stop there however. Definitely try to repeat your process and see how it develops. Happy crafting!

I have already started another one! Thank you. I might just make some different style balls and see what they look like. If they don’t work, I’ll have pieces for something else...

Can't wait to see the next one. I can recommend sketching some ideas, sure you will digress from them when you're making. Personally I can see some loose bits of ribbon working nicely too. They may help animate the piece somewhat which may seem organic and create visual tension. Have you considered using wire as skeleton?
Good luck buddy!

Oh man, my sketchbook and me have a love/hate relationship. But we somehow continue on...I like the idea of loose ribbons, may have to try that on the next one. I used to use wire framing on things, but have been trying to go more natural and push the limits of the fabrics strength and stability without it. I really almost caved on this piece and added some wire, but was able to talk myself out of it. Thank you so much for your ideas and interest :)

ah. The purist approach :) I completely understand. Keep em coming.
I'd love a peek in you're sketchbook. It might not seem interesting to many but I find it very curious.

Thank you. The sketchbook is a mess (love/hate...), but maybe I’ll get around to digitizing it...I haven’t done any chat channels, but I like talking to other artists, so I’ll check this one out, thanks!

I like your idea of adding a big ball wrapped in sisal. Maybe utilize both the sisal and ribbon, so it looks like a seedpod of the same construct, or an egg.

Ohhhhh! Good Idea! Thank you. I like making rope balls anyway.

Does it look like macrame?!?!?!
