that method will work, but that is actually the "oil filter," the drain plug is a 17mm bolt on the other side of the bottom of the engine I believe, facing down.

The oil filter only needs to be cleaned occasionally, you should also always install a magnetic drain plug to collect any metal shavings in the oil. It's cheap insurance to keep that junk out of your engine! We used to sell this one in the shop I worked at:
