A recent Scientific American article focused on recent advances in deep learning techniques that are revolutionizing advances in machine vision. While the advances play out across a range of fields, the one that caught my attention was in the field of medical imaging. Researchers have demonstrated a system that classified skin cancer as well as a dermatologist. The researchers noted that such a system, installed on smartphones could provide low cost universal access to vital diagnostic care.
