If cutting back on fossil fuels is too inconvenient, some scientists say they have an alternative for you: Bean power.
If you want to be a responsible, contributing citizen of the world and do your part to fight Climate Change, then give up your Big Mac in lieu of a bean and cheese burrito. That's it, problem solved! No more Climate Change!
Well, it's not quite that simple, but some scientist are calculating that if, as a nation, America could forgo its love of beef and instead substitute their protein preference from beef to legumes, we could meet our Green House emission goals set by President Obama back in 2009. They claim that by making this substitution, while keeping all other things (fossil fuel consumption for example) the same, we could hit the lower emission standards. Their calculations also don't require us to go total vegan either, as pork, chicken, cheese and eggs are still on the menu. Only beef is to be eliminated.
Now, I like beans just as much as the other guy, and I'm not a HUGE beef eater (maybe once a week is all), but I have my doubts. (You can read more information HERE)
Still, it's an interesting idea. But, if I were a betting man, I'd bet against this ever happening. I think most Americans would rather be forced to drive electric cars than to give up completely on beef. So much of our American culture, tradition and palate incorporates beef.
What do you think? Could you completely kick the beef habit if it meant keeping your gas powered cars, but still saving the planet?
