Could Blockchain Technology like Steemit save Science from Budget Cut Backs? 🔬

Taking Science and Health back to the Dark Ages

As many are aware, the US Government with the recent administration has been hacking away at the budgets they feel are detrimental to cut back in order to lay way to a more prosperous nation. No matter what side your on, its very evident that some of these cut backs are invalid and sometimes plain asinine to the betterment and advancements with the human condition.

As an American here, I do see some need for budget changes and what areas truly do need Government backing. Issue I take is this, a recent proposal by President Trump was made last week to not only cut back 18% on the National Institutes of Health but in turn to delegate down the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with unclear budget cut numbers as well with the nations Health system. If that was not enough, there will be plans as well to trickle down the Environmental Protection Agency to a huge cut of 31% by this recent proposal.

Then comes the science research hits. In addition, the proposed plans are to also include cuts of $900 million from the Office of Science, thus creating a stagnant option for further research advancements in many areas of sciences as a whole within the borders of the United States.

Nuclear arms research, don't worry you guys will get a raise. With all the tension built up around the world with so much nuclear arms flexing, the US Government wants to sink out the budgets from scientific, health, and environment advancements so we can further develop tools of destruction with a shift in budgets to get the Department of Energy funded plenty. Better yet, these funds are solely to be placed in the hands of nuclear weapons development and not into the subsidiary offices of the Department of Energy who do research for renewable energy systems which could better our issues with the ever growing fossil fuel situation that should one day become scarce in this world.

The need for funding of science

I am guessing that someone at the White House forgot to send the memo that disease research is seriously needed and the possibility for more pandemic outbreaks could hit any region at any moment. Renewable energy development is at a stage of not only a need to know basis but also a dwindling resource we bank on in the form of fossil fuels could very well become a ghost town of a situation to obtain not too distant in the future.

We as a race of humans struggle with balance and I don't blame anyone for making snap decisions on what needs focus and what may not, this is where good debate belongs and flourishes. The question arises for me though about one thing, has the powers that be truly looked at all options or is it just their huff and puff syndrome leading the way when it comes to budget decisions for the people of their countries? Health should never be tampered with, I don't care what anyone believes but keeping my loved ones safe and free from pain is top priority in my own life and I would suspect in everyone else's lives.

Great Scientist Thomas Edison Images.jpg

Maybe Thomas Edison was foreshadowing the day when the governments of the world had no use for science due to the fact it doesn't fit sometimes into their own schemes of world dominance? Something to ponder there!

A proposal of my own

I beg to believe here that the US Government is still blind to the usage here in crypto currency heaven. The advancements we are making and the wide open boundaries of possibilities that we can do with Blockchain technologies. Look at us here on Steemit alone, we post some blogs...a system kicks us back value through its algorithm and no one is out a dime for that other than the time the wonderful developers put in to make this a working reality.

Science and Health may need to wise up and look towards us here for other avenues to keep chugging along.

Many of us have grown with more usage for crypto currency due to the nature of the beast at our door with Central Banks. We have be ostracized in our own little ways from the mainstream financial system and governments enslaved to them and worked our way here to break free from that. It is clear to me today after reading a lot of the damage being done to our Arts, Science, Health, and Environmental systems lately that these entities as well might be drifting along in the same boat as us here.

I think I have a slight solution for them Maybe its time these Departments embraced technologies like Steemit has created, get a funding site going for their researches and let the citizens of the world UPVOTE their causes to get the research done? I believe we are all at a stage we can't expect the governments of the world to always have our back so maybe its time we all start pushing to fix the areas damaged by the system and help everything along in a form we as a people of the world would like to see the human condition travel down together.

I envision this could spread out to other avenues, health insurance blockchains, college tuition blockchain funding, small business loan blockchains where simple UPVOTES get the job done for what people believe in. And the biggest one yet, a real voting system for democracy where we can actually know our votes are really being counted so we have no issues knowing those running the show are the ones we really wanted in there.

I am not against who is in office now, nor who has been...sometimes I think its more our fault for letting the madness carry on, I think no matter what, with the condition of the US Government at this stage...Americans will not get what they need out of these guys till we reform the issues going on inside the whole of the system. This recent news that we are about to turn our backs on the most common sensed programs that helps citizens and the world progress has me really scratching my head and dumbfounded on how much longer we will let this carry on. We must unify

" And suddenly, like light in darkness, the real truth broke in upon me; the simple fact of Man, which I had forgotten, which had lain deep buried and out of sight; the idea of community, of unity." ~Ernst Toller

Very informative article. Now following!

I really appreciate the support and feedback. I tend to dive on in when I catch something in the news that bugs the hell out of me and flow on out. Hopefully the point came across well enough. Followed you in return, thanks again!

I think in some cases the "scientific" institutions and the way they are run currently in some cases ARE the problem. Getting cut off might shake things up a bit and force them to regroup. I agree with the premise that a nation which is cutting back on its R&D is shooting its own foot long term. But the premise that more funds for research automatically means more scientific progress needs to be looked at.
I think the whole system of scientific research is seriously rotten.
My wife is finishing up her PhD in chemistry and the things that are going on there beggar belief... basically the whole objective of the exercise is getting published and get grants.
But what gets grants is not exactly scientific neither is it really contributing to scientific knowledge.
I would judge a lot of what goes on in this research institution as highly suspect in the sense that a lot of papers are not reproducible. As a system I believe it needs serious overhaul.

On the other hand, there are some interesting developments going on. Currently very visible with Jordan Peterson. Currently a bit controversial because of some social justice warrior conflicts (themselves arguably bit of an exponent of a dysfunctional university system)
Whether you agree with him or not, he is now making a huge impact with his teachings about psychologies and humanities research. The controversy got him notoriety and the man makes a lot of sense so his audience is getting huge (all in all approaching 50 million views)
Through Patreon he is up to about 39.000 USD per month. He is plowing that money into lectures which he records and makes available online for free. Arguably it is now possible to get, through his work and that of others, access for free to a more complete humanities education than within the university.
On the other hand I think that the monopoly of universities on generating scientific progress is being eroded quickly in some fields.
First by their own failure to keep up scientific standards (check out cargo cult science discussion by Richard Feynman)
Second because the stranglehold of paid journals on the publications is slowly eroding (more and more open source efforts)
Third because of technological advances, which are making some tools more accessible (you can have a gene sequencer in your garage these days e.g.)
Fourth because the internet allows ad-hoc groups to form virtually, and like you said get their funds from crowdsourcing, renting lab time as required without having to own expensive equipment (think Airbnb for laboratories) or hybrid campaigns like Tim Ferriss' https://www.crowdrise.com/timferriss which is getting the funds for a study that the traditional "scientific" community simply refused to look at because it is politically sensitive and would never get funded.
Cutting funding is also cutting the ties that control research, if there are alternate means of funding maybe that frees up scientific curiosity to look beyond the bounds of what is politically acceptable....

That is such an amazing comment, wish people dove in like that more often. And I agree with you on all facts, the science we have right now is highly manipulated and highly a business format so much I almost at times think the Central Banks even own that with our Government. I need to read up on Jordan Peterson, not very educated on his efforts there but I will check into that.

My thing is this, the world seems to have derailed in a lot of areas. I think a decentralized scientific platform where we as people host where funds can go on a basis they present their research to the world and thus have a system in place to really fund the right important things that benefit human kind is very much in need. How to go about that I am unsure but I do see the very corruptions in the scientific community as well. But your also right, cutting funding does free them from the ties that bind them as well and giving up control of Government on them. That is a positive outlook I failed to hit on

The whole political situation is quite silly, but I love it because the attempt to gag him in effect has backfired and given him a bigger platform than 100 universities put together. I'd recommend not to look too much into the political stuff as life is too short... That episode in itself is illustrating why universities are fast putting themselves out of business. Sadly he is one of a very few group of professors who refused to be cowed. Most of them are (even if they have tenure!) going out of their way not to make waves. Not exactly scientifically minded.
But Petersons series on psychology are mindblowing pieces of philosophy founded on the great thinkers! You don't have to agree with him, but it makes you think and it inspires a lot.

He puts his whole lectures online which are a bit much but a great channel edits them in bite sized chunks per theme: here is a selection on motivation:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_K7XH1AIG8wZtQSM56Tyc-CR9ypvCbrF the channel has others
He also has an outstanding podcast with Joe Rogan (more political starting out but throughout some amazing philosophical observations...

I agree, life is too short to get too wrapped up with politics, especially the immorality going on within it all around the world. See that is how I view science, they should be making waves in the system...its about making the human condition better and learning so its obvious to me to do that you would need to crack a few eggs and be ahead of the system a bit. Instead they let themselves be controlled which stifles the growth process of discovery. I am going to check out that link in few....curious to learn more always.

Great article. I like the idea of more research being funded and published on a block chain system.

I do have to disagree with one thing... I think that the government should have no position in the funding of any research. This government meddling has taken science and converted it into this new religion of "Scientism". Research should be funded by private individuals who are engaged the fields they are interested in. The peer review and grant awarding systems that in place from the government budgets are visibly broken. If a scientist wants money from the government they better tow the government line or the funding will stop.

Oh no worries I am with you completely there. Kind of was what I wanted to get across that maybe these areas of research need to take things into their own hands and out of the governments like us individuals are slowly doing against the Central Banking system. Couldn't agree with you more in this area, think that would advance human kind even faster so that way the work can truly get done.

Thanks for the support and kind comment, followed you and hope to hear more from you. Plan to dive deeper into subjects like this one so keep an eye out

Thanks! I am following you too!

Mostly many goverment see cryptocurrency as threat.. Nice posting ! :)

I agree and they are really off the chain lately with some poor decision making it seems sadly. Those that feel this is a threat are probably just stuck on the old ways not realizing the opportunities they have in front of them to have a nation full of prosperous people including themselves. Hopefully one day we will educate them about the beauty it will be to adopt crypto currency as a form of currency. One day at a time my friend. I am here for the movement so more posts like this will be coming, I can't shut up about it much lol

Now following!

I really appreciate that and for the support. Just followed you back my friend, about to check out your posts in a minute as well

Do you think that if I do some strange studies (as it is seen by general public) on electron accelerator I would be ever possible to find funding from society, using like steemit platform or kickstarter? It seems unreal. Blockchain technology and reward based platform are great things, but unfortunately as I see it, we cannot give full freedom to society to decide what and how to fund in science, since general public does not have any idea about what is happening in science. Maybe, scientific community/ies can do this job, but than we will loose decentralization, the system will be quasi-centralized,in a sense that only some part of society can do judgement. Notice, that I'm still think in paradigm where we have classical tax system and budgets, but only redistribution of money happens differently. But if all society stop paying taxes on science, we will have absolutely unstable situation, since people will give their money only to research they understand or at least grasp idea. What we should do? From my point of view we should try to optimize how we spent money in science using blockchain, we pay to much for everything. We need to have feedbacks about equipment we buy, in first, in our countries, than all over the world. We should publish negative results in blockchain, so everyone can see what they should not repeat simply to save money on other research. I hope I will finish my white paper soon, so I can write my ideas in more clear way. Cheers. Thank you for thoughts.
