We won't know. Everyone has their own culture, there could be some that are hostile or welcoming, how would we react? In media, aliens are presented as advanced invaders and this mindset has put a mark on humanity. In history, we were always cautious when discovering something new and not only that, we were always a violent race, conquering other countries to gain total control. If aliens visited us, we would back away and try to defend ourselves. If we would be the one who visit another planet full of sentient life, how would we react? What would we do?
It depends on the situation we are in, nowadays we are a curious race, we would probably try to make peace with them, getting to know each other, but the problem is how would we communicate? Maybe using a omnilanguage like binary codes or even using the period system because atoms are always the same.
For now, we can just dream and imagine.

I also like the idea of communicating with music (as in Close Encounters). There is a mathematical underpinning to music, with the most harmonious sounds having the simplest mathematical relationships, so it's likely other species will respond to music in a similar way to us... That is... if they have ears... This conversation has made me want to rewatch Arrival (highly recommended if you havent seen it!).
No, I haven't watched it, but I sure will. Thanks for mentioning.
