Is it possible to grow new neurons?

in #science6 years ago

For a long time it was believed that once you lose neurons, you don't grow any new ones. That was the prevailing theory until research over the last two decades convinced scientists that older brains do create new neurons in a process called neurogenesis. However, now, one researcher has found no evidence of adult neurogenesis, while another researcher in a different journal found exactly the opposite. She found that up to hundreds of new neurons are added daily throughout adulthood, so the controversy continues. If it does occur, neurogenesis occurs mostly in the hippocampus where new neurons may contribute to the region role in learning and memory. I read about this in the October issue of Discovery magazine. It is my favorite science magazine.

I am very interested in neurogenesis because I have cerebral palsy, and it would be really great if there was a way for the brain create new neurons throughout life. That might mean that one day we would be able to regenerate parts of our brains.
