Yes, it is really amazing! They are doing a lot of research about different materials (not silicon). In Switzerland, for example, they were able to increase the performance by using Ga instead of Si. As it is much harder to build Ga power cells, they made only little ones. In order to reach the same surface they invented some microchannel mechanism that captures the sun of a wide area and reflects it to the small Ga cell.
Another possibility is to use nanoantennas, they could have an efficiency of more than 50% (but not physically made yet)
