A new study was recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, that was an 8 year long study that sought to investigate the effects of fried potato consumption on human health. The study involved 4,400 male and female participants, they were between the ages of 45 to 79. When the 8 year study was completed, researchers found that roughly 236 of their participants had passed away.
They found that for those who consumed fried potatoes more than 2x per week, that it doubled their risk of death.
Fried potatoes didn't just involve French fries either, they also say it could be hash browns and tater tots, any sort of fried potato. They didn't find any connection between the consumption of regular baked white potatoes and death.
French fries and other fried potato products are a major staple of the American diet.
It's estimated that Americans on average will consume about 29 lbs of fries every single year. When it comes to potatoes, this is one of the most popular and frequently consumed vegetable within the US. Sales of just tomatoes and potatoes alone are said to make up roughly half of all the vegetables that are eaten in the US market.
Researchers say that more investigation is still needed in this area, in order to further understand the correlation between the two. But this isn't the first time that high processed and starchy foods have been suggested by researchers to be bad for us.
Just a few months ago, British scientists were issuing a warning about the results of their own research in this area. They concluded that there might be a risk of cancer when it comes to overcooked and starchy food. And they said that for those who still want to consume them, that they should at the very least do so by cooking them at lower temperatures.
It's no surprise that researchers or nutritionists and other health experts might say that French fries aren't exactly the most healthy snack or meal decision that one could make. But the results of this study are interesting when it comes to further investigating the link between fry consumption and the risk of death.

I eat McDonalds Fries like 2-3 times a week, should I be concerned. Certainly am, after reading this Post :P
I like them too. Cut back to 1x/week maybe?
Ooh I hate the McDonalds fries. They are so small! They had an extra kind for a while: big, fat fries with skin, now those were great! Not there anymore though, lucky me I guess ;-)
those were awesome i can't believe they took them away, but they take all good things away.. they took away their pizza too lol
They had pizza? Wow, I didn't know that!
this was like 15 years ago though lol only 2 locations in the US still serve the pizza and it makes me want to make a road trip to them lol
Aah, yeah I guess I missed that, 15 years ago (if they had it in the Netherlands). I can understand! Honestly, I'd take that US road trip, even if there wasn't pizza involved ;-)
You do know that only poor people eat at mcd right?
I live in Asia, were food is Cheap. Mc Donalds is not where poor people eat. Maybe it's a poor choice of Diet but would'nt categorize food like this. Food is food man
Im viet and i pass on mcd.
goole the ingredients in McDonalds fries, that may help you stop eating them
High temperature and vegetable oils.. might be safer to deep fry them in saturated fats. But probably best to just bake them.
Wish fries weren't my favorite food, well, right behind potato chips!
ive been trying to opt for more sweet potato instead now but it just isn't the same lol
OMG,,,,, l love french fries.... it's so lovely... but should try to healthier...
Oh my god ! I love eating fired food such and French fried and fried chickens ! Actually I know it's not healthy eating such food but I love eating and I can't reject them when I smell them ! So I used to do more exercise and drink more water so that I can be a little bit healthier .. maybe.
Everything deep fried can harm your health, if you're eating too much
But fries, i love them! :)
u get an up vote.
Is an ironic upvote? :P
but thanks :)
Fries + Burger + Fried Chicken + Fast noodle.... I'm dead soon ;(

Bring on the Reaper!!!
Lol well ya they arent good for you haha
why is it always the good stuff lol 😜
For real though. Fries are so damn good
Interesting stats, it also wouldn't help that generally , the fries aren't just eaten on their own and end up being accompanied by a burger or fried chicken and a big softdrink .
Good post.
So once a month pastrami chili cheese fries from The Hat is ok.
Exactly how I feel after.
I love it when people tell me they had a vegetable for lunch and it turns out to be french fries.
Hey @doitvoluntarily. Sweet piece you just wrote on health diet. I'm brand new here and I found you through your post on talking about The Grass-Fed Beef Market Is Thriving. I really appreciate what you're doing. I also saw on your wall that you write a lot of topic about health, food, nature. Keep going! upvoted and support!
thanks for your feedback chickenfk :) following you now as well, hope you are enjoying steemit!:)
Living longer increases your likelihood of dying as well, and not letting the wife see this post, she nags me all the time about eating a bit more healthy, she's right, but why does the bad for you stuff taste soooo good?
But..but i love to eat my fries. Well other people are smoking and im eating my fries..
To stay healthy we have to be careful what we have to eat nowadays. Fries in the fast food is not healthy its better to make your own fries.
I don't eat them that often but still crave for it once a once.
Here in asia, the staple is rice but that's link to another problem - diabetes.
loveee me some rice and soya
I think I have too much rice at lunch already. :-)
for sure does!
lol those OTHER "drugs"
these addictive foods act like drugs and eat up your health like drugs! hate drugs hehe but nutella! love me!
No McDonald stops from now on. TT
Damn, that's crazy. But it's all about processed foods and bad fats. French fries themselves aren't that bad, especially if you go all healthy about it with sweet potatoes as the source :)
well potatoes themselves are said to cause inflammation so they aren't all that good when eaten in excess, imo 👍
and do i ever love them!
I don't eat fries that often but when I do........
Well I suppose we all knew eating too many french fires was not good, fast food should not be eaten too many times each week that's for sure. But I would not have thought it would increase cancer, increase the waistline yes!
Those fries that you posted the image of are really killing, no pun intended, the idea of not eating french fries. THEY LOOK SO TASTY RIGHT NOW.
Somehow I don't think I'll be eating fries again. Excellent post. Will follow.
Useful Information. All of us have to start avoiding fries.
I am what I eat, I think the foods we eat has the greatest impact on our body.
I think Chinese people is clever in their diet becuase they are very pay attention to what they eats, they call diet therapy "食療".
Fries are addictive. I remember seeing a youtube movie once where they showed Mcdonnalds Big Mac and fries after 1 month 3 months 6 months. The burger was decayed and ugly. The fries looked outside as fresh as the first day they were made. I remember of another youtube of a guy that ate fast food 3 times a day for a month I believe. He gained weight and lost his ability to make love. So it does not surprise me. Thanks for educating the public on this important issue.
I'll die for fries.... Hahaha... Kill me and send some in heaven too :)
we all gon' die someday so lets eat fries and enjoy life before death comes
It's the new cigarettes!! I know how I gonna go if I feeling down! Freedom Fries of death!
lol!!
Based on this study I am actually dead. Well damn. :)
lol!
I would think that it would be common sense pretty much that eating that crap will bring on a ton of health related issues.
Insightful but i'll still eat it haha
Fast food should be forbidden. Too many disease it cause. Cook as much as you can at home!
I dont think it should be forbidden, people should be free to make their own choices.. I don't want to get into the business of making their choices for them and infringing on their free will:) but yes I agree i try to cook at home more now but i am not very good at all lol
anything deep fried and consumed as dry without any addition of water is unhygienic for health. If anything deep fried and then cooked with water is comparatively less unhygienic than eating dry anything deep fried...!!!!!
Its likely that the fried came with other fried foods, so its not just the fries itself, but the entire meal eaten with them.
If you're cooking at home try using oils higher in unsaturated fat, or pan fry instead of deep frying. It combats the unhealthiness a lil bit.
Well... No shit?
Well leave the fries out of your diet plan ! If you are in love with them , here is a tip ! you can cut them in big pieces boil them for 10min then quick fry them ! less trans-fats are absorbed in to the fries ! ;)
Fries are not food and should be avoided at all times during the week.
Food comes from trees, bushes and soil not from a factory
Supermarkets do not sell food only food like products
Excellent post dear friend @doitvoluntarily, very interesting, I must admit that I was surprised
you have a good day.
But if that double is from 0.0000001% to 0.0000002% and given ultimately no one is getting out alive... eat more french fries?
I mean, really headlines like this have an issue because birth is the #1 cause of death. In nearly every case, people who were born... die... so eat more french fries?
So perhaps what we want to know is if eating more french fries lowers our lifespan. But then if what it's saying is that we would live to only 98 instead of 99 if I eat french fries when I am 20... eat more french fries?
I should have been dead by now already ... ;-)
Everybody should know now, that french fries are extremely unhealthy, but problem is that they are delicious. I can proudly say, that i stop eating them. IF you want to live longer, you should too. Great post.
Do you think it matters what type of potato is used? Are sweet potatoes are only going to increase your risk of death by only 1x. Very interesting read though. :)
The only person who will always be benefited by french fries is the owner of Macdonals.
