SAVING THE BEES: HONEYBEE POPULATIONS ON THE RISE AFTER COLONY COLLAPSE DISORDER

in #science7 years ago

From Newsweek

Just over a decade ago, beekeepers began reporting disturbing declines in honeybee populations. Bees, they said, were leaving the hive and not returning. The phenomenon, now known as colony collapse disorder, is alarming not only because of the central role bees play in plant life around the world—and thus most other life—but also because no one knew why the decline was happening or how to stop it. Several possible causes have since been identified, but that hasn't prevented the disappearances.

But new data give some reason for optimism. According to a report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture released Tuesday, honeybee populations are on the rise. As of April, an estimated 2.89 million bee colonies existed across the U.S., an increase of 3 percent compared to April 2016.

Colony collapse disorder makes sustaining a hive difficult. When worker bees abruptly leave, the queen bee is left with just a few nurse bees to raise the remaining immature larvae. Although the colony is left with ample food following the disappearance of the workers, the hive can’t operate without their contribution, eventually leading to its death. Colony collapse disorder refers to the combination of events that lead to that destruction.

If the Bee's are gone - we are gone.

It seems like we are turning the corner on the bee health problem. The bees that survived the mites and viruses are tough enough that they don't need a lot of help to survive. Things are moving in the right direction, but we still need to protect them from careless spraying and habitat loss.

For people who don't keep bees but want to help, the best thing you can do is mow your lawn only once per year in the early spring.

Well i am so pleased to see you pick up this subject which has been one of my older posts !! We all need to talk about this alarming situation as we count on bees more than we realise i think !! Effective Pollination of our crops is essential for our survival !! I hope this gimmer of hope is a real thing and that the bees in our fields and gardens will not be a thing in our post, so upvoted no problem @cryptojunkie )

Have you seen the documentary by Morgan Spurlock; inside man on bees? He actually found direct correlation data between colony collapse and a specific Monsanto pesticide.

Great pictures!
Thank you for good posting!

Thats really true, my uncle have this problem, and he had 100 beehive. and now he have only 50. He is trying to sell them. He thinks that he cant do anything... And then he will start another bussines

The queen bee is always the one whose command depends everything.
agree with you to save the bees.

Good post. If we don't save the bees soon, we are sabotaging ourselves.

I'm very pleased to hear that our bees are making a comeback. I think the uptick could be due to more people taking up beekeeping. I did several years back, and many others began keeping bees in urban areas.

We have to save the Bees but don't forget about the human race dude! we are important as well.

Everyone that has a garden and enough space should have bee hives. It's really that simple. Bee Kind! Steem On!

Apparently the EC banned a certain Monsanto chemical and a year later the little beasts are thriving again . Can the rest of the world learn from this ? They seem to be very forgiving .

What great news. We need to make sure we don't rest on our laurels and continue to research how to help them, and make sure we are doing it. Bees are so important.

thank god!

Well to be honest I don't trust U.S. Department of Agriculture in slightest. They just manipulate the data as they want like other US government agencies. Don't forget that most of the senate are climate change deniers and that is just tip of the iceberg. Unless you yourself or people who do keep bees tell you this is happening I would consider it as 0 value information. Still thank you for sharing

There's only one way to save the bees. We need to pollute more! Only when our back is to the wall will we actually do something about our impending doom.

Once Einstein said ,“If the bee disappeared off the face of the Earth, man would only have four years left to live.”
