The return of the giants from our past?

in #science8 years ago

I'm sure many of us have visited museums and gotten awestruck by the majesty of the skeletons of the dinosaurs, the woolly mammoth and other prehistoric animals. Many of us also imagined these animals flourishing in the zoos in our cities or even roaming free in the wild.
However,as we grow older, all these seem to be in the realm of science fiction. The good news is that new technologies are coming up that make seem to hold the promise of all our fantasies come true. For example, there are ongoing researches into cloning genetically authentic mammoths but these researches are all in their infancy.I guess we'll just have to sit tight and hope for the best.

I attended a seminar from a harvard researcher (George Church) who is attempting to stitch back together the woolly mammoth genome and re-create the animal using an elephant, a while back. It was an interesting talk, and though they appeared to be a ways off from completing the project.

They are actually trying to first get an hybrid between the Asian elephant and the woolly mammoth and then see where they go from there,it's not going to be an easy project

Yep :) curious to see how it will go.
