It is obtained during extraction of fossil fuels, and is also produced in swamps and seabed because of the presence of natural gas there. It is produced from the decomposition of waste by some types of bacteria, and is frequent in agricultural activities. It is the simplest hydrocarbon compounds and can be manufactured. It enters into several interactions as its interaction with the elements of the seventh group "halogens" in a substitution reaction.
