Brief history in her own words:

My name is Paige Du Preez. I grew up in the coastal town of Mtunzini in KZN where I still currently reside. I am a working student who tries to fish as much as possible in my spare time whether its popping off the beach, fishing in the lagoon or fishing deep sea.

I got into fishing when I was three years old and my first time deep sea I was nine years old. My father was and still is an amazing fisherman and he taught me all I know today. My father and I developed our relationship as i grew older based on fishing and now we have caught a wide variety of fish together and made memories I will never forget from this amazing sport. I love fishing because it is an instant relaxer. You go out to sea and to me its as if my soul comes home. The feeling of hooking a fish and experiencing those head bumps and screaming reels is a feeling like no other. Its instant excitement and an adrenaline rush.

My favourite fishing story would be the day I hooked my first marlin. All i wanted for my 18th birthday was to catch a marlin. We went out to sea that day in rainy weather. We had never targeted billfish before so we were very unprepared for what happened next. Our target fish that day was couta. Trawling a live massbanker on a wire trace over a pinnacle and the rod ran. Not fast at all, exactly what you would expect from a shark. As I picked up the rod thinking how dissapointing, the marlin showed himself and so the fight began. On 13kg line and on a wire trace with one single and one treble hook, I landed my first black marlin of 80-100 kg. The best part of it was it was safely released to give someone else the same joy it gave me.

My conservation message to all lady anglers on protecting the ocean would be to take the time out of your fishing trip to pick up that floating bottle. Pick up the loose anchor rope floating in the current. Pay it forward to the ocean so that one day our children can experience what we have now and possibly even better. Release as much as you can and be considerate with the catches that you keep. There is always another day to go fishing but there might not always be another fish to catch.
