Don't Get Tricked, Bro: How to Recognize a Roommate Scam

in #scams7 years ago (edited)

When the supposed 25 year old Romanian master's student pictured above contacted me about my ad on Craigslist, some red flags went up right away. Women looking for roommates on CL never, ever want to live with a man and in fact typically include an explicit "men need not apply" in their ad, for understandable reasons.

The second is that she ticks off a lot of boxes for generic internet man bait. Young, exotic, beautiful. Wow, what a coincidence! What a stroke of luck to have her apply, and her wealthy father is going to send a check ahead to cover the move-in expenses! What's not to like?

Well I'm not an idiot for one thing. I also consulted with @amandarichards who affirmed that the message below reeks of a classic roommate scam common on Craigslist and similar sites:

Hello. I’m Jessica Martha . I was born in Romania. I will be renting the room for a year for my masters degree.

I’m on a research currently in Agana, Guam . My dad will be paying for the room with check before my arrival. I am single, fun, loving, clean, loyal and respectful of others and respect others religion. I don't have any pet. My father is from the States and my mother is from Romania. I'm 25yrs old. I graduated last year at University of Bucharest

Here is a remote area which calls are very hard to go through. I won’t be able to come over and check on the room before renting. Please tell me little about yourself… Let me know the total amount for the first month rent, i will be paying upfront so that you can be rest assured that am really interested in renting the room from you...

Please get back to me with the following details so that i can ensure you are ready to rent the room to me. I will sign all necessary papers/Lease at the point of my arrival because there is no printer and scanner close to me and i will also be giving compensation for giving me the room as i won't have much time to search for other rooms.

Full Name:

Full address with apt#:

Cell & Home #:

Total amount for move in:

I'll be waiting to read back from you with the information requested so that i can forward it to my father to issue out the check for the deposit and month rent upfront as soon as possible, with that you can hold on the place prior my arrival. Thanks for your co-operation.Jessica

A little bit of research revealed how these scams work. They have some reason why they can't meet you in person to check the property out first. They're typically outside the US, claim they will rent the place sight unseen, pay in advance and take care of the rest on arrival.

Apparently what happens if you give them all the information they ask for (I didn't) is that they sent you a cashier's check or international money order for more than the agreed upon amount, which you then deposit. Your bank doesn't stop you from doing this and the money does appear in your account for a little while.

Then they ask for the excess, sent accidentally, to be returned to them. After you do this, their check bounces, the money vanishes from your account, and they disappear with the money you sent. Similar, vaguely, to the 419 email scam in that it makes the amount you send them seem insignificant next to the huge amount they offer, or have sent you in the form of a bogus check.

But then, poof, that money vanishes along with the scammers, and whatever you were duped into wiring to their account. I'm glad I wasn't born yesterday, and have a history documenting and diagramming scams like this. I'm also glad I got a second opinion on it. When in doubt, ask someone you trust.

It also never hurts to google scams related to whatever it is you're doing, just to see what kind of games people are running. What all is out there, so you can compare your situation to those descriptions and see if any of it lines up. If it's too good to be true, it probably is, and bears investigation.

Stay Cozy!

I dunno man. Seems legit, and I think she likes you. Did you even reply?

Yeah, scammers are always on the prowl.
I have seen my good share of scams too.
Someone pretending to be from my brother's bank had sent him a text asking for his credit card number with the reason it had been blocked. Poorr innocent boy sent it and your guess is as good as mine.
Their activities are increasing daily thanks to sites like Craiglist.
I wonder why one would so badly want to steal another's money, but apparently these guys dont give a f*ck.

Post is very good. a highly propesional fraud is done. many victims. need to be careful. they are very propesional in working. In Indonesia they usually do by phone by saying you get a reward. car or money. let's ask and share. Scammers very propesional. Its example from indonesia.

How well you have articulated this scam, its totally unknown deal for me but its kinda unfortunate

Then they ask for the excess, sent accidentally, to be returned to them. After you do this, their check bounces, the money vanishes from your account, and they disappear with the money you sent.

Wow, that’s some crazy s..t. About a year ago I had a similar incident. Not with roommate, but with scam. I had a phone call, and this guy said he was from IRS. First I didn’t think it was a scam, he was asking some basic questions. More he asked, more I became suspicious. At the end he wanted to ask me for my social, and I never share these type of sensitive info over the phone. He became angry and told me he issued a warrant against me and in a few hours the police comes to pick me up. I hung up the phone and saved his phone#. I went to the police to report it, but they told me they couldn’t do anything about it, they said it happened to them as well and this guy is probably somewhere from India where most of these scams originate.

This just happened to me in September 2016. Thank you for the thread because the elements of scam totally matched up with what I was experiencing.

It's insane how many scammers are out there and the amount of people that still fall for them, which leads them to continually making these types of scams.

Good on you for figuring it out quickly, be careful when renting out rooms, Craigslist is a breading ground for scummy people.

That's a new one. I think it's a bit weird that she (or he) graduated from school in Romania yet is now in Guam, wtf? That, and the grammar is terrible for someone allegedly in a masters program. I wonder how many people fall for that crap?

ffs.People have become ruthless nowadays. And do they gain big profits from that?
Probably yeah right...they could do it as a profession 100 times day...

Okay, now I'm sure I won't be tricked!
By fancy photo of my new roommate!

Scammers are some of the worst people out there... I hate people doing this crap so much.. especially people calling on old people asking for money for their 'dying child' that needs all their savings for a miracle vaccine.. It is disgusting and good thing you didn't get caught in it!

But what if she is actually a real one and wants to rent a room :D
It would be such a pity :((

Ohh thats really some serious scamming. However people just keep on inventing things so thst they can just continue to hit the people. Also mostly the older people are easier targets they have to face a lot of this.

Thanks for reveling this scam out. I was not aware about this type of scams. It seems to be very real and legit but in last we become a victim.

Are many Romanians named "Jessica Martha"? ...

I usually wait until they outright try to scam me before dismissing them, but this does sound extremely sketchy.

Sadly many of the people who are getting constantly scammed are the elderly folks, some scams are very sophisticated and sound legit, I know some people who like to troll the scammers just for the giggles I could see myself doing this just to have a laugh lol. Thanks for the update I didn't know of this one will keep note of it.

Nothing wrong with doing a google image search of the pic they send as well. Will pop up some more red flags when you find the actual person/other attempts and posts by the scammer.

I did indeed try that, but it doesn't show up in a reverse image search.

DAFAQ, now i am rethinking about many things

That is some serious scamming..
If something like that goes on here, a lot of people will be caught.
People aren't so vigilant here

We live in a world full of scammers, we can't judge whether someone really needs the thing or is he pretending, In our country a family has 5,6 children, all of them including their father and mother beg the whole day, can you imagine there income, I think its more than people like me, still they beg. Those who really need money and beg for it are now considered as the same, it's because we can't differentiate who is worth it or not.

wow this scams is very intersting one. you are the only one person who can doing all work very easyly like a superman. carry on @alexbeyman.

Oh! Already people do not know what to invent to deceive others. You have to be very careful and be attentive to any situation. We must also have malice, so to speak.
Thanks for sharing this experience.

Oh that seems like very legit query and I am sure there might be a lot of people falling prey to it.

A common scam around here is to get a call from someone claiming to be from revenue Canada they tell you a warrant will be issued for you in hours because of back taxes and ask to be paid in BTC. What they do is get you to put money into BTC ATM's but scan their address QR code so the BTC is sent to them.

It's so bad that the machines have a sign on them saying that Revenue Canada would never ask for BTC and some people will still fall for it. Idiots.

haha yeah revenue Canada and BTC don't mix together how can people even fall for this.

I have no idea LoL

One guy that has a BTC machine in his shop called the radio station. Hesaid that he has video footage of a woman who was scammed coming into his shop, reading the warning sign on the BTC ATM and then proceeding to feed bills into the machine.....

scammers are all over the internet and currently they are working very hard and regularly so keep yourself safe as much as you can...
never reply to un-recognized mails or friend requests...

Nice content chosen my friend. Content looking amazing and its feel was just awesome. Well done and keep it up 👍

When its too good to be true, some bells rings in my head and i start researching for where the scam is. This one is quite creative since i would never figure out how they would make money. At least now, if something similar happens to me i know whats the catch ;)

Like Jesse, there are some rich girls in Romania who are doing this with such morale. And that is not only in Romania, but also in most cities. I agree with your mind. I suspect that you think and someone else can think. You are all rounder @alexbeyman

Love is in the air ....

inhale and exhale

Who is interested in the scamming part :p

I'm scammed almost every day. Or, if not scammed, at the very least someone tries to scam me. Usually more than once a day.

Haha yeah people do that and how tricky they can be!
