Genesis 49:3-4; Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might and the be beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity and the excellency of power. Unstable as water, you shall not excel, because you went up to your father’s bed; then you defiled it, he went up to my couch.
Most of us if not all are familiar with the story of the fallen angels, how satan fell from grace to grass and became the devil we know today. He started of as the morning star, a great angel and head of the heavenly chorale, but he was not satisfied with that, he wanted the ultimate power, he wanted to rule and so decided to overthrow He who gave him his very existence and the power he possess and so he ended up losing everything.
From where I come from there is a proverb which says you do not hit the head of he who has your fingers in his mouth because he can easily bit your hands off, this also teaches us to show respect to authority and give to Caesar what is Caesar. Being a Christian comes with responsibility, the same way every single title we have comes with its own responsibility and we are to act and do what is required of us accordingly. As the first born son, it was the responsibility of Reuben to protect the dignity and pride of their father and the family as a whole and so he defiling it was even worse and this cost him a lot. Some Christians misuse the title of Christianity to do things hoping to be protected by God from its consequences however this is not how things work. God instituted the hierarchical structure from the beginning of creation and so he sees to it that everything is done accordingly and orderly.
We have to learn to execute our responsibilities accordingly as Christians and not leave any out both in the ministerial calling and in our daily lives. May the good Lord help us and strengthen us to do what is right at all times to the glorification of his name. Have a blessed day even as you meditate upon the word today.
