SAM

One of the few things I can remember doing with my daddy when I was a little girl was the day he took me to the local library to get my library card. He was a reader and he must have wanted me to be, too. I remember him telling me the rules before we went in the door, about how you couldn't talk above a whisper, and you had to treat all the books very gently or you would be in trouble with Miss Preig, and after I saw her I knew how terrifying it would be to be on the bad side of that grumpy old lady!

I think I read every book that little library held, at least once, and looked forward to the arrival of the Bookmobile with more selections from the big city library. My library card was my prized possession, even though I never had to show it again because Miss Prieig knew me by name.

Even though I do most of my reading on my Kindle these days, my bookshelves are still loaded with all of my favorites that I can't bear to part with. If someone asks 'what is your favorite book?' , I say 'these!'

I have a very strange feeling to read the first post in a challenge I've released. Great pleasure and great joy. Thanks a lot for your support!
I am very glad that this challenge has made you write such a beautiful post. Childhood memories to be about books! Like you, my childhood has been marked by books, they have increased my imagination and relieved my life quite hard in those years. My mother was a reader, she had a great library, and it also gave me love for books. Unfortunately, I don't have those books anymore ... some were sold, others shared with friends.
What beautiful and visual is your story about your local library, your father and Miss Preig! I see this story as a movie.
Thanks Melinda!

I do have a few of my dad's books. They are treasures. I see good things in SAMs future! Great idea for a challenge!

Hello my best friend ho are you ☺

All is well here. How are you?

My shelves look very different, there are two rows of books on each shelf and there's no space for new books any more :) It's good to read!

This is what my shelves looked like after a huge donation of 20 bags of books to the local library book sale!

Maybe I will do the same one day.

Lovely photos and great story. I too remember the joy of going to a library as a kid. I would find a section I liked and read every book on the shelf. I have went through several stages in my life where I accumulated books and then cleaned house and then accumulated again. I am actually back to getting most of my books from the library again instead of buying.

I get all of my Kindle books through the library.i very rarely purchase a book these days! Since there aren't any decent book stores around anymore in my area, it makes it much easier! These photos or what my books elves look like after a major purge!

Enjoy the beauty on Saturday @melinda010100

Thanks! You, too!

I like the posts, and I also love reading and you want to please visit my post

Thanks for the resteem! Please don't ask for visits though as I would hate to have to block you.

Lovely story of your childhood! I feel rather sad for children these days that don't grow up with books in their hands as we did, as there is something special about holding an actual book, with pages to turn, and each book has its own fragrance from the paper, ink, and binding choices! 😊

My granddaughter is 12 and she devours books, so there is some hope! It makes me sad to see so many libraries turning into computer labs and pushing books off into the corner Thanks for stopping by!

A good post my dear Melinda, reading opens us many worlds, it's wonderful. Whenever I can I read some book

I don't seem to read nearly as many books these days and I put the blame completely on Steem!

This is great to read a piece about someone , to discover these little things, I love this SAM idea !
Have a wonderful week-end my dear Melinda ckyoqyrbi1.png

Thanks! And I love this wonderfully expressive Wonkie, too! I can tell by all your delightful new artwork that you are enjoying your days!

Such a beautiful post. It reminded me about my home library. It is so good to know we share a similar passion for reading. 🙂
Even if I use my Kindle for reading, I still love the feeling when I touch an old book. Same as you, my dear Melinda, I keep all the books and from time to time, I re-read them. And I do have many books.
Plus, every book carries a memory about a happy moment or someone dear who is no longer with us. How could I ever sell or throw away my beloved books? 🙂

I agree! My daughter raids a book or two from out of my collection once in a while. Nothing could make me happier that she loves to read as much as I do!

Love your bookshelves, Melinda. What a nice memory to have at the library with your Dad.

Those bookshelves are one of the reasons I fell in love with this house when I first looked at it 20 years ago. I've never regretted buying it!

I enjoyed reading about your fun memory with your Dad. I still like holding a book in my hands to read. I am not stuck on it, but I still like it.

Me too! Because of my MS it has become more difficult to hold a book and turn a page at the same time. irritating for sure when you are continuously dropping the book and losing your place.A Kindle makes reading so much more pleasant.

I can see how it would be. Thank goodness there is another way when you need it. 💜 I don't have a kindle yet, but I'm sure one day I probably will have one.

There are so many things that make it so much easier to live my life the way I want to!

What a beautiful piece of you that you chose to write about, Melinda! Who doesn't remember the excitement that came with that first library card? I remember it like it was yesterday.

I agree that I read mostly on my kindle nowadays, especially when I am away from home, it is just so much easier and makes sense. But, it cannot take the place of having a binding between my hands.

I love how your father gave you all the rules before. He sounds like he was a wonderfully patient and loving man.

So nice to see real books! I cherish mine :-)
Such a beautiful SAM post @melinda010100!
Brought back many memories of library cards
and so many great books! ❤ 📚

howdy there melinda010100! what kind of books are most of those, or are they everything? I mean on every topic.

The books are pretty much everything. Lots of reference books that were so necessary in the days before the internet. Some favorite novels and literature, some history and biographies, a couple shelves of kids books that I miss reading now that my grandkids are growing up. I should have done a couple close ups with titles! I love looking at other people's book shelves.

howdy again melinda10100! yes aren't books wonderful! and libraries too. Well, you may need those childrens books for the Great grandkids? lol. I know that's something to think about isn't it?

With our grandkids being 21 and 18 we're thinking huh I wonder how long before we're Great grandparents? lol. I bet I'll be one before I hit 70.
