Farm animals, on occasion, can be hazardous to your health. Every year people are hurt and/or killed by farm animals. This article will tell you how to be more aware and cautious.

Use extreme caution when around the hind legs of horses, ponies and cows. Their kicks can kill you in a heartbeat. Their hooves are rock hard and can leave you badly injured and maimed for life if they kick you. Even if they are tame and you have been around them a thousand times be careful when around their powerful hind legs.

Large farm animals can be territorial...especially if they have babies. These animals can chase you if you get too close and can ram you with their head, can knock you down, bite you and, step on you. A full grown mother sow can be ferocious if she thinks her babies are in danger.

Large farm animals can hurt you for a number of reasons. It could be accidental or secondary to sickness or fright. You can suffer a crush injury by getting caught between a steer and a tree or piece of farm machinery. Barking dogs, thunder, and other loud noises can spook an otherwise docile animal. A large horse can simply step on your foot and break several of your bones.

Little children can be vulnerable to additional dangers on the farm in regards to animals. They may get flogged by a rooster, scratched by a cat or, bit by a dog. Though difficult, try to take additional measures to protect children while on the farm.

Now please don't get me wrong...I know bunnies and piglets are cute and that bottle feeding a baby lamb is wonderful. The positive aspects of the farm far outweigh the negatives...in my opinion. I'm just trying to warn against complacency and alert you to the hazards that farm animals can pose.
