What is the reason for the president to not defend the American election system?

We can only speculate whether it's black mail, finances, or other activities that may be behind this decision. However, it is also possible that Trump is doing this just to spite all the people who have put an asterisks next to his electoral college victory. I want to know and so does the rest of this country.
