По легенде, известный древнегреческий поэт Гомер (автор Илиады и Одиссеи) в детстве был беспризорником и не знал, кто его родители и где он родился. Уже будучи известным Гомер пришел к оракулу и спросил о месте своего рождения. Прорицатель дал такой ответ-предостережение: «Остров Иос – земля твоей матери, и она получит тебя мёртвого, опасайся загадок, что загадывают дети». Уже будучи старцем Гомер прибыл на Иос и на берегу увидел, как дети местных рыбаков возвращаются с моря. Поэт спросил, что они поймали. На что дети ответили: «Что мы поймали – то выбросили, а что не поймали – то при нас». Когда Гомер попытался разгадать загадку в задумчивости прогуливаясь по набережной, он поскользнулся, ударился головой и умер. Так исполнилось пророчество оракула.
