It never ceases to amaze me how many new applications are being found for robots as the days go by. I never thought I'd be living in a world where a robot flipped my hamburger for me and another robot constructed it with tomatoes that had been picked by yet another robot.
Only to go meet a realtor after lunch and buy a brick house in which the bricks were layed by robots as well! Which brings me to the topic of this article...
Robots can now apparently build homes and they can do it faster and with more precision than a human mason (bricklayer)!
Does it excite you to think that your next home could be built by robots? Well, its true and its possible. The robot mason named SAM 100 is ready for duty. It was designed by a company called Construction Robotics which named their robot SAM 100 because SAM is short for "Semi-Automated Mason."
According to Construction Robotics, the bot is extremely efficient and has the ability to place around 300 to 400 bricks per hour. This is incredible when we compare it to a human which can only lay around 60 to 75 bricks an hour.
Based on current data its easy to say that as of last year the construction industry began going through a boom. This is fantastic for the economy except there is a catch... Data also suggests that the industry is facing a severe labor shortage which puts pressure on developers to find alternative ways to build. Due to the fact that skilled laborers are in such high demand and many of them are leaving the workforce to enter retirement it seems clear that the gap is expected to widen.
Fortunately this story has a happy ending, I think... Well maybe not happy but there's an ending at least. It seems as if robot workers like SAM 100 could help alleviate some of that strain. In my opinion I think it would be better if humans who were out of work entered training to replace the aging masons rather than let another industry be completely dominated by robot workers but what do I know eh?
The fact is that capitalism will find a way to solve problems if there is profit to be made and out of this idea came the amazing artificial mason, SAM 100!
What do you guys think of SAM 100? Do you think this is the answer to all the world's building problems? What effect do you see this having on the industry in general?

An interesting question comes to my mind: what's gonna be the future of building technologies, bots like this or 3d printers?
As far as i know, they started experimenting with 3D printers, where they can almost finish the whole structure in just one day. Bots like these are also very impressive but i am not sure in which ways these can compete with 3d printers, in terms of being mainstream. Of course, 3d printing seems to be only for cheap housin (this can change though) but still, it's remarkable that we have these kind of technologies. It's almost overwhelming!
