SPOILER ALERT!
Hello guys!, Welcome to my blog. I’m going to review one of the movies I’ve been waiting for the most of the year, Mortal Kombat. Why? Because this film is adapted from a very famous game play and this film also features actors from the country where I live, Indonesia, as the main character, Sub Zero, played by Joe Taslim. Before Mortal Kombat (2021) there were two previous films, namely Mortal Kombat (1995) and Mortal Kombat Annihilation (1997).
The film was directed by Simon McQuoid and stars Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), Mehcad Brooks (Jax), Lewis Tan (Cole Young), Chin Han (Shang Tsung), and Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero), the script for this film was written by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham. You can enjoy this film in some theaters that are allowed to open during the pandemic or you can watch it on the online streaming service, HBO Max.
Okay, this film tells the story of a journey to a fighting tournament carried out by champions from the earth and the Outworld who inherited the dragon emblem. The tournament that was to be held was the final battle that the champions from the Outworld had to win, to complete their 10th consecutive victory and finally Shang Tsung kahn had the right to rule the Earth.
The focus of the film is Cole Young, a former MMA champion turned fighter. He doesn't care about winning, all he cares about is getting money to support his family. From birth, he didn't know why there was a dragon mark on his chest. The mark immediately took Cole on a challenging adventure and endangered him and his family.
Cole Young is not an original character from the Mortal Kombat game. He is a new character the writer created for this film. Here he is linked with one of the iconic characters from Mortal Kombat to make his character strong.
In my opinion, Cole’s relationship with one of Mortal Kombat’s iconic characters is still not well explored, as if part of the story is missing. This makes Cole’s character weak, even though he is the center of the story.
In addition, the history of Mortal Kombat combat itself is also not well explained. In my opinion, this is most likely done on purpose so that it can be developed in a sequel or prequel.
However, the main strength of the film Mortal Kombat (2021) manages to present brutality, sadism, and close combat. Many of the movements are similar to video games, such as when the Scorpion draws fire from its mouth and Sub-Zero creates a wall of spikes out of ice. Then a victory celebration like in a video game.
Mortal Kombat (2021) is good enough, it’s just that Warner Bros. Needs to improve the quality of the story if you want to develop it into a story that will later become a sequel or prequel to the film, I mean like Marvel.
That is my review of the Mortal Kombat (2021) and this review is argumentative, I hope you enjoy it.
I'm sorry if this review has been out too long. Have a good movie!
