Cover of the December 2007 issue of PC World
As far as mainstream PC specific magazines go, PC World was probably the best. I preferred Maximum PC but that one was a little more specialized. Though it would eventually become watered down with other tech products (TVs, phones, etc.), that kind of stuff was only really just starting to creep in in 2007. The December 2007 issue of PC World includes:
Features
- Seize the Web - A look at 39 "exceptionally interactive" web sites and services. Some of those include video websites (Metacafe, YouTube, Veeb, Crackle, Google Video, Yahoo Video, Jib-Jab, etc.), sites for building your own social network (Me.com, CollectiveX, KickApps, etc.), blogging sites (TypePad, LiveJournal, Blogger, WordPress, etc.), online book publishing sites (BookSurge, CafePress, etc.), and more.
- The Cost of Your Second Life - Second life is an online virtual world or metaverse that is still around today. This article looks at some of the things you can buy in the game.
- Life Without Software - An experiment in giving up desktop applications and working solely with web based apps. Personally, I still generally prefer desktop apps.
- Google's Street-Scene Machine - A look at how Google creates its street view including the special spherical cameras used.
- Best of the Mobile Net - A look at some of the best web sites and web apps designed for the small screen including mobile versions of Amazon, eBay, Facebook, and more.
- The Malware Marketplace - A look at how would be hackers can buy their bots, tools, spammers, etc. all online without having to write any code.
- The 10 Biggest Web Annoyances - Items mentioned here include bad privacy policies, difficult forms, trolls, disappointing video, and more. Pop-ups aren't even mentioned and they are still what I hate most.

I still have several magazines from that time somewhere; they bring back fond memories.
I wasn't very tech-savvy, so I'd just buy whatever magazine was available at the time. It seems like only yesterday we were amazed by Google mapping the streets with its cameras.
One of my favorite author's book: [Literature] Charles Dickens: Sketches By Boz - Illustrated And Annotated Edition 1/347
