When manufacturers introduced dive computers, they just replaced the depth gauge and bottom timer in the console with the dive computer that combines the two. Majority dive computers make use of real-time ambient pressure input to a decompression algorithm for indicating the remaining time to the no-stop limit, and thereafter the decompression needed to surface with an acceptable risk of decompression sickness.
Numerous algorithms have been used, and dissimilar personal conservatism factors may be available. Some dive computers allow for gas switching during the dive. Audible alarms might be available for warning the diver when exceeding the no-stop limit.
