The Infinitely Heavy Rock

in #religion8 years ago

Hey guys new to the platform. For my first post I decided to present one of the arguments against God, philosophical God rather than any specific religions God, and show why it is false. I will say I'm atheist and will most likely do some articles later on far better arguments against the existence of God and will also debunk some of the standard arguments for his existence. So here goes.

First one is one of the simplest and easiest to disprove arguments against the existence of God. It takes the form of a simple question.
"Can God create a rock so heavy he cannot lift it?"
If the answer is yes then he cannot lift it so there is something he cannot do, namely lift it, and thus is not omnipotent. If he cannot make it then again there is something he cannot do, namely make the rock, and hence is not omnipotent.

There are two main forms of answer to this question. The first is to properly define omnipotence. Omnipotence only entails being able to do that which is logically possible. With this new found definition we can say that our original question was ill found and entails a logical impossibility. We can see this by reforming the question as "Can god create a rock so heavy that a being who can lift everything cannot lift?" Clearly the answer is no because a rock so heavy a being who can lift everything cannot lift is a logical impossibility. It is in the same class as being both invisible and pink, creating a solid intangible object, or squaring the circle.

The other answer involves accepting that god can do not only that which is logically possible but also that which is logically impossible. This was Descartes view on omnipotence. In this framework God simply creates the rock and then does the logically impossible and lifts it.

I tend to favor the first answer as the second answer leads to absurd conclusions. For instance God can will himself to not exist at any time in the past, present, and future and then simultaneously exist in all those places. It also isn't a being worthy of worship since he would be completely capricious by his nature.
