How far does a religious person have to go to appease their god?

in #religion8 years ago

I don’t usually get into politics and/or religion but I’ve just seen a post on Facebork.

Someone posted on their Facebork page:

This is why I’m NOT that sad about George Michael’s sudden death. He chose a lifestyle to mock and slap God in the face. You reap what you sow. I fully expect a mass exodus of people who either practice homosexuality or their sympathizers because I do not share their opinions. I also expect many to not read this post through and only get half the story – your loss. While I don’t hate such people as a person, I do have to hate their unholy and unnatural lifestyle choice. As a Christian I have to love what God loves and hate what God hates. There’s no sitting on the fence about this life or death issue.

I’m not naming the person that wrote it, I’m not sharing the post on Facebork either. I think they have removed the offending post. I happened to see what appears to be a screengrab of the post.

This person is an Australian author and has a few books out. This kind of thing is tantamount to career suicide.

Why on earth anyone’s sexuality has anything to do with anyone else is beyond me.

I have no interest in what happens in someone else’s bedroom (bathroom, kitchen, garage…) and I’m pretty sure any supreme deity has so much on their plate that sexual frolics must come way down their list of important things to smite people for. For example, hurting others – including animals.

The part of the quote that REALLY gets me is this:

As a Christian I have to love what God loves and hate what God hates. There’s no sitting on the fence about this life or death issue.

While that may be correct according to Christianity (I’m not certain that’s the case, but for this, let’s say it is), religion is practicing your belief according to the rules of that religion. It is most certainly NOT a case of – I practice this and therefore, that means YOU have to, too.

I’ll say it again:

That's against MY religion, so I can't do it.

It really is as simple as being on a diet and expecting everyone else to leave off cake too.

Sort:

Suppose there is a living God, a God that made everything.

Suppose that that God dislikes certain activities -- like any homosexual act.

Suppose that God made a horrible example of some people who constantly performed such acts.

Would you think the horrible example was just to punish the evil doers?

Would you think it was to teach others that such behavior was not good, even dangerous, and that one should not do it at all, ever?

Would you think that God had no right to do that?

Well, whatever you would think, you might read from Genesis 18:16 to the end of Genesis 19.

I think that says that whatever God hates he will destroy, and that we better be careful that we don't do anything that he hates.

You, of course are still free to have your own moral code, but if your code is not God's code you might find yourself in trouble.

Or, I think that if there's a God, she/he would have made people with free will so they can do what they like as long as it doesn't hurt anyone. I also think a living/loving god wouldn't have any hate in their heart.

I suppose, what I really believe is this.
An omnipotent being that can't stop the horrible stuff in the world isn't really omnipotent and if she/he isn't omnipotent, does she/he deserve to be worshipped?
If god can stop the horrible stuff but doesn't, again, is she/he really worth the worship?

Suppose letting humanity do whatever it wants for a more or less fixed period of time before God puts and end to it is really God's plan?

Suppose the Devil, the first rebel, is allowed to corrupt the minds of all who will let him, such as Adam, and that humanity is given a relatively long time to learn that man cannot successfully direct himself before God steps in and removes the influence of the Devil and sets things back to the way he wants them.

Remember, Adam disobeyed a direct order from God, and that led to centuries of pain for mankind before God will purge the universe of all those who refuse to obey him and thus usher in an joyous life for all still living -- living according to God's original plan, obeying his laws, laws which restrain us from doing that which is bad for us or others.

The reason things are so bad now and God is allowing it is to teach us that our ways (taught by the Devil) lead only to grief, that we should do things his way.

Nice set of responses. I couldn't have said it better.

People who hope there is no God always seem to assume that, if He does exist, He will agree with them instead of what He has already plainly revealed to mankind. This is neither logical nor wise.

I thought "God" didn't hate!

You should get a concordance and look up all the instances of the words hate and abhor. You might be surprised at how many of them were talking about things God or the Lord hates.

Yes but that is the old testiment God I think?

Yes, the same God that in the new testament says he is the same yesterday, today and forever.

Lol that is why I have given up on organised religion!

Organized religion is mostly a counterfeit by the Devil of what God says is the way things should be done.

Believe what God says, not what some person who is mostly seeking his own benefit says. Look for servants, givers, not takers and you might find something true to believe and a true God to worship.

Most people "give up on religion" because they want to continue doing whatever it is that they think is sinful in the eyes of God. It is difficult to voluntarily become a servant to anyone, even an all-powerful God. Too many still belive, "If it feels good, do it," and thus continue to do things they believe are wrong.

Yep! That's what I thought too!

This is one reason I stay away from religion. It can divide people

Yeah, it's disturbing :(

It does separate those who try to obey God from those that don't.

Interesting narrative. Religion, sexuality and politics are fragile subject matter. ☆☆☆☆☆😎

Oh tell me about it!
I've got my bunker dug and the helmet securely fastened...

Batten down the hatches! Incoming! ;)

So true! I really am considering a bunker. There is a lot of very angry people in the world today. It seems that the SHTF is coming soon.

Glad you did bring this to our notice. Its so sad when George Michael died irrespective of what your sexual views are , but its even sadder that this man thinks he is the son of God and condemning all in site

It was a woman... but yes, absolutely!

Especially in light of all the charitable donations he made anonymously.

Prepare to feel his wrath

Hmm...

I often wonder what happens to the people who don't follow any religion. When an 'act of god' happens, do the atheists not get affected?

It's a good point and no one actually knows what happens to these people.. none of them have ever came back

My religious beliefs (on this issue) match yours, but I understand that those are simply my religious beliefs. This person's beliefs are theirs.

I don't care what their beliefs are as long as their actions are legal and non-aggressive. Their speech is up to them, just like mine expressing my dislike of their ideas is all on me. My choice. Their choice. I don't consider simple speech an action. Shouting people down is an action, just speaking your mind or writing your opinion is not.

And since that is their belief, it's silly for me to want them to stop saying it. You can't change people's beliefs by flaming them, blocking them, or shouting them down. That just reinforces the beliefs.

You have to start at the meeting point. The point you agree on.

They really believe that homosexuality is a dangerous sin. They want people not to go to Hell and they really believe that homosexuality is a "choice" that will send you to Hell. They are almost certainly wrong, but they really believe that, and so they want individuals not to be gay and for public figures not to endorse homosexuality. I happen to believe that won't change anything, but that's my belief. They believe that it might cause others to sin and that this will send them to Hell. They don't want that.

They don't want gay people to go to Hell. I can agree with that. I should start there.

Good point, well made.
