Bible Verses on Taming The Tongue | Be Slow to Anger

In this article, we will examine some Bible verses on taming the tongue to make us be slow to anger, not gossip and think twice before we slam somebody in life or on social media.

Being kind to others is a principle of 'love thy neighbor' and being a Christian you may need to work on how you respond to others, even when they may be angry at you or did something unkind to you.

The Bible is the expression of the all knowing one true God and it amazes me how much wisdom is included in Scripture including advice on how to hold your tongue and create an ideal and practice within yourself of proper responses to the people and situations you encounter.

"Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves." (Matthew 10:16)

The Wisdom of Taming The Tongue

James 3

1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

3 Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.

4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:

8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

The book of James is a "How to" of discipleship in the Lord Jesus Christ.

The tongue is the ambassador of the heart.

The devil wants control of your tongue.

Those who teach and preach the word of God will be held to a higher standard, a stricter judgment because God magnifies His word even above Himself.

Old saying: Better a Bridle on the tongue, than a lash upon the conscience.

An out of control mouth is evidence of an out of control life.

Stop Harming Others with Gossip

Gossip: When people discuss a matter or a person, but they are not, nor do they desire to be a part of the solution but continue to maliciously talk about others for the purpose of harming them.

Two Characteristics of the Unbridled Tongue

  1. It Defiles
  2. Inspired by "hell"

When you maliciously gossip about others you defile and disgrace the body of Jesus Christ.

Do you slam others on Facebook or Twitter?

You are partnering with HELL when you do so.

The devil is the prince of the power of the air and all that floats over it.

The devil accuses us day and night before the Lord.

Don't be an accuser in league with the devil.

More Scripture on Taming The Tongue

Matthew 12:34

34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

Proverbs 10:18-21

18 He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.

19 In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.

20 The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.

21 The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.

Holding Your Tongue Shows Maturity and Wisdom

A closed mouth gathers no foot.

Sometimes just close your mouth and listen.

Don't be quick to anger in your responses.

A calm response to someone who is angry can break a bone.

Be wise in the word of God and understanding.

If you have sinned against others with your tongue, call it what it is and repent.

Repentance means you agree with God that you were wrong.

Don't Let Your Tongue Destroy Your Inheritance

1 Corinthians 6:9-11

9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Learn and train yourself to respond to others with kindness, being slow to anger and without wrath.

Having a filthy mouth, using curse words, is not the way of the Lord.

As Jesus said in Matthew 12:37, "For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned."

Choose your words wisely because your words and how you deal with others means a lot to God.
