Depression

What is depression?

Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home.

People casually interfere with this illness as a common thing. We tend to struggle to get over the situations that cause the depression to start. When we strike that stage where depression kicks in, we start to forget about everything, especially God. We forget He can help us to get through anything we struggle with. But while our minds sorrow about the situation, we push Him away.

By talking to Him and share your problems, and relying on the word of the Bible, you can expect of God to act. He will help you get through the situation.

Psalm 42 : 6, "Yet I am standing here depressed and gloomy, but I will meditate upon Your kindness to this lovely land where the Jordan River flows and where Mount Hermon and Mount Mizar stand."

When communicating with God, we sometimes just throw our problems to Him, but it take two to tango. You have to pray to Him, and you have to believe that He will be there to help. By only speaking to Him through prayer, He will fix what is broken, but it might just take time!

I Samuel 1 : 10,  "In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the Lord."

By praising the Lord, we can get rid of that ugly feeling. We need to pray, we need to sing and praise His name. By preaching God's name up high, He will reach out. All it is, is belief, prayer, and love for God.

Psalm 34 : 1-3,   "I will praise the Lord no matter what happens, I will constantly speak of His glories and grace. I will boast of all His kindness to me. Let all who are discouraged take heart. Let us praise the Lord together, and exalt His name."

Depression doesn't last forever. The feeling will start to fade. I was in the dark hole of depression once, and then I found God. In the end we will all see, after all the darkness, the light will shine again, your light will take a flame, and you will feel free and like a new person after all the trouble.

So basically you are saying you have to deal with it yourself ? Ok a bit more religious but comes down to that. I would recommend therapy...

Not at all, it will just be so much more easier to cope with it when God is by your side. Therapy is good, but God is better!

mmm disturbing. We are too different probably...

Turning to God can mean many things. God might direct you toward therapy. Sometimes turning to God means turning to your Pastor which is similar to therapy and maybe even your Pastor will direct you to therapy. The end result is the same. How you get there is different.

The biggest difference here is that @brotherbear is saying to seek God first.

Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Most people will not seek therapy right away. He/she will need a friend or relative to convince them. Even then, it could take some time. Christians have a faith in God that allows them to trust in Him when they know things are not right. A Christian is more likely to seek counseling/therapy before any other person would because their faith and trust in God.

What is disturbing is that most suicides could have been prevented through therapy and that therapy is something people need to be convinced to do.

This also made me realize something about depression. We all know that depression will make us retreat inward, but God does not want that for us. He wants us to look outward to Him. Therefore, we can assume that God's will for us is not to face this illness alone.

I have felt the depression bug, and it can easily consume one's soul.
It is easy to blame the devil or your brain's inefficiency to cultivate dopamine.
It is hard to get out of bed when you have a looming sadness, but the only cure for depression is not anti depressions, it is working through your sadness by letting it go as other things start to fill your mind.

The mind before getting out of bed; "Sad sad sad sad sad sad sad"
The mind after doing a few tasks; "Sad sad task sad task sad task task"
The more you interact with the world around you, the less you live inside your mind, the less life is about you, and the more attention is given to the world around you

Yes, the Bible is solution.

God is the solution!

Nice read!

My mother had bi-polar disorder which is randomly changing from mania to depression. This post really affected me. The verses were insightful.

"but I will meditate upon Your kindness to this lovely land"
-States that you must try to look past bad thoughts and note the good things in life, this will probably bring back the 'happy' you.

  • "In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the Lord."
You must want to be happy, when you are depressed, it is easy to stay in this state, you must want happiness in order to obtain it.

-Finding God as a method to battling depression is the ability to see happiness and the potential for Good, even when the day seems bleak, and hanging on to these thoughts until it consumes your soul.

I think depression makes a man dull.we should stay energetic

A wonderful and beautiful post.

Thank you very much @tanyaschutte!
