RE: How far does a religious person have to go to appease their god?

in #religion8 years ago (edited)

My religious beliefs (on this issue) match yours, but I understand that those are simply my religious beliefs. This person's beliefs are theirs.

I don't care what their beliefs are as long as their actions are legal and non-aggressive. Their speech is up to them, just like mine expressing my dislike of their ideas is all on me. My choice. Their choice. I don't consider simple speech an action. Shouting people down is an action, just speaking your mind or writing your opinion is not.

And since that is their belief, it's silly for me to want them to stop saying it. You can't change people's beliefs by flaming them, blocking them, or shouting them down. That just reinforces the beliefs.

You have to start at the meeting point. The point you agree on.

They really believe that homosexuality is a dangerous sin. They want people not to go to Hell and they really believe that homosexuality is a "choice" that will send you to Hell. They are almost certainly wrong, but they really believe that, and so they want individuals not to be gay and for public figures not to endorse homosexuality. I happen to believe that won't change anything, but that's my belief. They believe that it might cause others to sin and that this will send them to Hell. They don't want that.

They don't want gay people to go to Hell. I can agree with that. I should start there.

Good point, well made.
