We recently had a postal vote in Australia (that cost the government $120 Million) on the topic of marriage equality.
Across the country, the winning yes vote was around 60% of those who voted.
Now, both sides argued strongly, and both sides exhibited ugliness in their campaigns.
As a casual observer, here are my observations:
Regarding the No vote, it was spear-headed by religious groups. Now, my opinion is that living in a democratic country means that no-one should impose their views on others. That is why a country such as Australia has a successful democracy.
Also, those same religious groups I'm sure have other lifestyle choices which they are against. For example, why havent they been as vocal in speaking up against child abuse that was rampant by some clergy? Or why dont they speak up against adultery for example? Both of which can harm a greater number of people than gay marriage. Both of which have escalated in the last fifty years thanks to the moral degradation of society. Seems a bit hypocritical to just focus on this topic.
Turning to the other side, gay people should not be imposing their lifestyle on impressionable children as well, that is the worry that the No voters have.
Time will tell what effect, if any, the vote will have. I personally think it's just another topic that the media has made a storm in a teacup, mainly because of its controversial nature.
